This is wonderful! I have a really hard time with faces from the sides, so I think this might help me out with that!

I've tried a lot of different ways to draw faces semi-realistically but they never quite look right. I think I'll give your way a shot, so thanks for the advice.

Great! That is actually super helpful as one key problem I have is my males looking too effeminate.Β

I have that same problem, so I'm constantly doing face studies of the subtle differences between male and female features

Yay I am not alone~ That's an idea I need to put into action more often.

I tend to focus on the eye height and jaw when it comes to differences between their faces. The depth of the brow ridge also has an impact but that comes in more with coloring than proportioning unless you're doing side views. There are also stereotypically feminine noses and mouth curves but those have less of an impact. I find the eyes have the biggest impact, the jaw second, then the smaller details.

Oh, thank you that is really import stuff to know. (And I previously didn't) Now I know to watch how I do the eyes and jaw closer.

I think the hair turned out great this time ^^ he's a bit more feminine than I wanted but I think that's because I decided kind of half way through to draw him and the base was already rather feminine XD Ah well. I'll get him down eventually.

there's not that much difference really, aside from the height of the eye line. The more masculine you want a character, the closer to the brow line the eye line should be.

GlassLotuses In reply to WindMeister8 [2017-02-17 03:13:21 +0000 UTC]
Aside from the jawline and maybe the length slightly, there's not a heck of a lot of difference in shape as far as I've noticed.

I don't think I'm going to follow the tutorial exactly (I'm going for a more cartoony looking style than a realistic style), but I will definitely borrow things from it. That little side oval to represent the side of the head, for example, seems like a really good idea. :0
