Description Happy New Year everyone!

Well, it's been the new year for a little while now, but this is my first piece of the new year, so it still counts...I think...

Just a little tribute to the science fiction of yesteryear. Being the new year, I thought I try something a little bit different. I've always loved the Jules Verne 'Earth to the Moon' and '20,000 Leagues' antiqued kindof idea of science fiction, so I thought I'd try to go in that direction. (Also, I think I've been watching too much Sweeney Todd and reading too much League of Extrodinary Gentlemen ).

In either case, this is what came out and if I was a better writter, I feel like there's a whole story I could go into with her and a whole little adventuring team, but for right now, I think her name is Adelle (like a-doll, get it? Ok, not that funny, but still...) and while I haven't decided for sure if she is entirely mechanical or only partially, but I am leaning to the partial angle. It's all steam powered and clockwork-like mechanisms, so she needs to stop for minor adjustments every now and again, but she manages. I thought it would be fun if she carried around a little case with tools and other attachments she could use in different situation. Just pop off a hand and attach a wrench or a drill or knife, whatever the situation calls for.

And no, I didn't stay entirely acurate with the clothing again, the hat is really more civil war and the bodice was inspired off of a photo I have in a book of the Princess of Wales in 1874, but I thought it worked right for the theme.

At any rate, I've prattled on a lot, really just started this as a single illustration, but we'll see if I do anything else with it.

Media: line art-brown Colerase on dura-lene, painting done in Photoshop and Painter, texture is scanned papyrus paper.

Sorry again for the larger watermark, but as some of you know, I've been having trouble with people taking and using for auction and other such things without permission, so just a nescessary evil.

you created quite a great character! I love the fact that she may have to stop from time to time to fix herself... very nice one! a story that would figure her and other characters as much interesting would be great !!

Tis a great genre
And yeah, you tick her off enough and I'm sure it does, but I have an inkling she's not the type to use it if not provoked

Well you certainly got the style down, and I just LOVE that blue accent in there. It gives it a cheerfulness to it^^ I do however wish the overall color wasn't "so" orangish, just slightly dimmed down...but only slight. But otherwise, beautiful work as always, I absolutely adore your stuff

GoblinQueeen In reply to Calliopie [2008-01-16 21:00:49 +0000 UTC]

You know, it's funny you say that because I did try it less saturated so it had more of a brown tone, and it just didn't give me the punch I wanted. Difference of taste, I guess

I must tell you I came on not expecting to find anything new and just love this piece. Prices for the prints do not seem to be working correctly. But I will check it again as I really like this piece- hope you know how good this is.

Wow, this is very sweet looking! I love the concept, and you pulled it off very nicely. I relaly love how you do coloring, where you focus more color in one area than another. It really works nicely. Great job!

GoblinQueeen In reply to kiki-doodle [2008-01-13 21:45:26 +0000 UTC]

It's definately something I'm trying to work on. I think it works great for directing focus and also, our eyes do it to a degree with atmosphereic perspective, letting the farthest things meld back...I have a long way to go before I think I'll really have it the way I want, but I'm glad you appreciate it because it's something I'm going to be trying to address more

Funny you say that cause I had it in mind to just do some rough sketches in more of underdressings so that you can see more of her structure, bolts/etc.

Oh my gosh... i love everything about this... O.o the style is sublime, the colour choices are wonderful! They make me think of another time, the dawn of an industiral age.... Normal this is the part where I pick my favourite thing about the picture, but I honestly cant. O.o I love everything about it. \

paradoxal [2008-01-09 05:18:17 +0000 UTC]

I like the ambiguity here. A lot of the structures at first glance look organic (the bone-like supports for her leg are a nice touch), but on further examination the surfaces are glossy, almost metallic-looking. She could easily be a fully-synthetic automaton, but at the same time she might not be. It's almost an inkblot test of semi-organic vs. mechanical! And the color choices of rich coppery hues with some eye-catching brilliant blue are incredibly well used. I have to wonder if the disconnected steam pipes making the framing of the image are a bit symbolic. The pipe is either broken or just disconnected, the girl's leg is disconnected as she fixes/maintains it.

The only critique that I would have is that I wish her button-up shoe was open a bit, so that we could see more of the support structure in it.

I really love the concept and how she is so beautiful, but is partially mechanic. It reminded me of the Disney movie Treasure Planet. They have all this technology with an old fashioned style to everythin. Anyways! I love it once again!

Love this piece, and I'd like to put in my bid too. If you decide to look for writers, well, I do love me some writing. *grin* But aside from that, I love the detail of this piece, and the color, and her little hand sitting by her tool chest...I pretty much love it all <3

This sort of reminded me of the anime movie Steamboy...I believe the creator of Akira made it.

Sweeney Todd owns my mind right now too.

i love the aesthetic from this period too.. there's a really odd beauty that came out of the industrial revolution. this is lovely.. wonderful colours.
i like the possibility of there being a larger story to it all too.. you really get that sense from looking at the picture
