Description Haven't posted any Whedonverse fanart for a bit, so here's one I've been working my way up to for a while - the mighty Mal Reynolds, captain the of Firefly Serenity and the baddest Browncoat ever ... he's a rebel through and through, don't broach no faith in the Alliance and would rather just have his freedom thanks to his beloved (clunker of a) ship. He's a man of principles, even though he's a proper outlaw all the way, so while he may be on the wrong side of the Law, he always manages to stay in the right ...

This is the most simplistic piece I've done for a while, but it still took me a few attempts to get right, between the sketch (which kicked my arse) and the background (just couldn't work out for a good long while WHAT to do ... even though this has ended up being one of my better ones). I think I got the likeness down pat, at least, at least within my own style - I got Nathan Fillion's MIGHTY NOSTRILS if nothing else - and I like how the pose ended up. But I'm definitely most pleased with the outfit, which I think I managed to translate pretty much PERFECT. Not wanting to blow me own trumpet of 'owt, but ...

"Sure, it would be humiliating, having to lie there while the better man refuses to spill your blood. Mercy is the mark of great man." (shallow jab) "Guess I'm just a good man." (another shallow jab) "Well, I'm all right."

Original inks created with Pilot Hi-tecpoints on Bristol Board, digital colours created in Gimp 2.6 with my Wacom Bamboo Pen. You can find my original pencils, inked lineart, digital colours and background in my scrapbook: [link] , [link] , [link] and [link] Mal Reynolds is property of Joss Whedon and Mutant Enemy.

Yeah, well this one was inspired by a pretty famous promo pic of Mal, so it wasn't too hard.

Bear in mind, though, they're pretty tight. I think the braces are more just accessories ...

Most likely. The least he could do is make them APPEAR useful. He doesn't even clip a pen to one of them.

Oh yeah, along with Buffy, Spaced and Battlestar Galactica it's the best show EVER ...

Thanks for the props.

Omg, I love spaced so much. But not many people in America know it, it just came out here like two years ago hahaha.

Oh yes. I know comedy wise us Brits are best known for Monty Python ... but Spaced is a whole different league. I guess I'm of the right age and geek-credentials anyway - I'm so Tim Bisley it's scary.

I actually watch a lot of British TV despite being American. I watch BBC America a lot. but, they usually play annoying shows. But, they sometimes play Little Britain, That Mitchell and Webb look, and Graham Norton.

It's amazing though, some people don't know Monty Python, you have to be literally living under a rock not to know Monty Python.

Aha! Cool. D'you watch Top Gear then? That's another one of my faves ... I don't even drive, but I love it cuz those guys are hilarious.

It was a pretty seminal show, it must be said.

No I don't, I'm not a big fan of cars at all.

Well, my dad's the one who introduced me to Monty Python when I was twelve hahaha, he's a good parent. XD

Neither am I, really. I just watch it for their antics.

I kinda grew up with it myself too. "No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

Yeah, my dad grew up with it. I think my favorite is exploding penguin "intercourse the penguin!" hahaha, gets me every time.

No they don't but I've seen it on youtube and such. Isn't it hosted by Stephan Fry? I love Stephan Fry, he's brilliant. From what I've seen it's really funny. I saw once where this guy impersonated Alan Rickman, it left me in stitches.

Oh yeah! "I don't play villains. I play very interesting people." Genius. It is a great show, I'm amazed they don't show it. There's a brilliant American stand-up comic, Rich Hall, who pops up on there pretty regularly - he's always worth watching on it. And yeah, Stephen Fry's a national treasure.

He is indeed, very bright and funny.

Oh yeah, he is very funny XD. I have to say I actually prefer British comics to American ones, with few exceptions.eg George Carlin and Lewis Black...ect..

Grigori77 In reply to SteamPunk-Anime [2010-04-05 23:41:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I must admit we do have a great comedy tradition over here. Eddie Izzard, Billy Connelly, Bill Bailey, Ross Noble and many, many others ...

But there ARE INDEED some great American comics ... although it seems some of the very BEST are unfortunately no longer with us. Richard Pryor, Sam Kinnison ... and of course the mightly Bill Hicks ...

SteamPunk-Anime In reply to Grigori77 [2010-04-06 00:56:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh shit, i forgot Bill hicks, how could I forget him... damn.

I use to like Mad TV and SNL, but they have both become pretty terrible. SNL went soft. And Mad TV is now completely lewd, it's all humor a 16 year old boy could come up with...so sad...

Grigori77 In reply to SteamPunk-Anime [2010-04-13 02:18:17 +0000 UTC]

I remember when SNL was considered the cutting edge of comedy ... hell, it was where John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd cut their teeth, resulting in the Blues Brothers (!) ... I think these days you kinda have to go to the source. Generally if something's made it to TV it could already be considered too mainstream ...
