Description For some time ago I started on a project called Maidens of the Seven Seas.
The main idea was to create seven mermaids from seven different cultures and tribes. Mermaids are a common folklore in most parts of the world, but have with time become very ‘Disneyfied’, sadly. So these are my mermaids - strong and fearless. The seven queens you might call them as well!

My first mermaid is inspired by the Maasai people, Kenya. Her tail is the one of a swordfish.

I have to say, this was eye-candy for me (I speak for all of of your other maiden depictions, too). Each are unique, very detailed in their expression with their use of color and detail. But what I really liked about them is how you've taken a unique approach and added different cultural inferences -- deviating (puns, gotta love em' lol) away from the influence of mainstream views.

Very well done, I must say.

The drawing, details and coloring rock. But I particularly dig that spear!

Very good work. It's nice to see diversity in culture and body types of mermaids, especially when they're so well drawn.

I wouldn't 100% say mermaids have become "Disney-fied", just more mainstream thanks to the internet.  Though I am an Arielholic and love her in a tail, I would say instead that is a jumping-off point for mermaids in popular media.  For merphiles (such as myself), it is great to see so many mermaids in movies, TV, and books now after hiding in dark corners of the internet in its early years.
But, if you think about it, it was not Disney who set this off, but rather Hans Christian Andersen when he wrote his classic fairy tale, who radically changed the face of what mermaids really were- aquatic-borne femme fatale.  Up until then, mermaids were thought of as beautiful monsters to be feared and avoided, but here now was a mainstream story that changed all that and said they had a culture and one of them secretly wanted to be human.  So, if anything, I am a hypocrite for my fascination with mermaids thanks to Disney, but I don't blame Disney directly for that disjointed-yet-popular view.

TRIVIA: scholars nowadays are saying H.C.A. originally wrote that story as basically a love letter to his never-to-be homosexual crush.  Talk about going against the main stream!

I have nothing against mainstream as such - but it's nice to try new angles on well-known subjects I think I guess I personally like mermaids more to be creatures than humans with fishtails...
But yeah, I am from Denmark, so I have heard so many stories and theories about Andersen and his sexual life - when I was a kid he was just a great writer, nobody cared about his personal life that way.

VERY neat.  Great combination of costume and subject, neat lines, wonderful colors, fierce, yet beautiful.   You did marvelous little touches.  Very much deserving of a favorite--and it gets one! Thank you!
