  Awwww....you too nice!!!  Thanks!

It was a stretch for me to do a piece like this; the composition I mean.  But the response has been very positive.  Our Zoo is running a contest right now for a fold out piece for their next magazine.  One of those professionals emailed me and recommended that I enter this one.....so I did, with a variety of others too!

Maybe I should try to enjoy the flamingos more.
I've been kind of bitter about them moving in since the duikers were moved out and I really liked the duikers. And the hooded vulture that shares the exhibit space is always in the back of the exhibit, maybe due to the new design since the front of the exhibit now has water to the flamingos can come close.

You know, before at our zoo, you never could really see them.  Now they are really up close and personal and I find that I've been missing out on a LOT with these guys.  They are definitely worth a second look from your camera!!!  I totally get being upset over the loss of other critters; I've been there.  Like, for instance, orangutans!  But I've also come to see them in a new light too.
Our flamingos are VERY vocal and I've discovered that they are very curious.  They can't resist you if you're standing at their fence.   It's actually kinda funny.  They try to act nonchalant but secretly they're getting closer and closer and trying to figure you out.  And they scabble a lot amongst themselves too which is amusing to me.

I've gotten a few neat shots when it's all sunny. The detail in the flamingo is all there but the background is all black due to the lighting. I'll have to see if I can find it.
I did overhear a visitor conversation. she was maybe 10, and her comment was that they sound and smell like farts. Exact words.
I will admit baby flamingos are pretty cute.
And the group the Oregon Zoo has are lesser flamingos which look pretty neat. They're an all male group so it'll be a while before they have kids.

Thanks ever so much!  It is rapidly becoming one of my favorite pieces!  I believe this will be an entry for the State Fair this year!

Now this I like, Cynthia - very neat and very clever. While I can see it is a flamingo, you have managed to capture an almost abstract image from this magnificent bird. At the very least it is an unusual pose. I am a big fan of the abstract in everyday life, and this fits the bill (or beak!!!)

Cheers

My thanks to you David for the lovely comment.  This is the kind of feedback that I needed!  I liked it, but what I like isn't also spot on.  So far, the response to this has been really good, so I'm very encouraged.

Hi Cynthia - I've looked at the other comments and they are very much the same. The idea of abstraction from the everyday world is very important in art and photography, and well worth developing. I think you've joined the the the club with this shot.

Thanks David!  I wanted a worthy shot for this year and so far, I only had one lined up to submit.  For the fee, I can submit three.  But for the past two years now, I've managed an "Honorable Mention" ribbon at the State Fair and I'll like to continue that.  Competition is stiff, as there is some really GREAT photography submitted every year.  I don't know if this one would do it or not but I like it enough to be proud of it even if it didn't garnish any ribbons!

So you submit to a local show? This must be a contender.

Local in the sense that it involves the whole state.  Then  I also enter on a county level, which is much smaller.

Ah...yes, I am considering this for the fair!  It is, in fact, a strong contender as it is getting a good response.  I liked it, but I wasn't sure if others would.
