I think you did a fine job with the background, partly because of the way you render with square brush strokes. But mostly that you manage to create the feeling of a complete PA landscape littered with domes and ruins just with a few props. A sort of synecdoche effect where the viewer has to fill in the rest for him/herself.

yes, the background is the part I'm pleased with here. Not so much with the character (and especially her face 
i had a lot of fun trying to turn the low-res top-down perspective of the original environment into a 3D place, and sky. The square thing was an afterthought, and it killed a lot of my detail work. But I think it actually improved the picture

Personally I think that there's a big clash of style. That she looks too "smooth" compared to the background. But even so, I think the BG looks great.

Indeed, Marle should look anything but pristine in the ruined future. I don't know what to make of her expression. She should look tired and lonely. For some reason, her face looks a bit older than it should.
But I'm being overly nitpicky. By all means continue your "overly serious" fan art. I take the story seriously, too.

I'm not happy with her face either... kept reworking it but it still doesn't feel quite right to me
Glad I'm not the only one who imagines stuff like this when playing the game
