Description Well it didn't take me long to do this, though I must say that this is the smallest loco I've EVER drawn in O scale. Yep! Each one of the squares showns is a scale square foot!! Even my fairly small On30 Porter looks GIGANTIC compared to the "Kornet" Porter!!

So anyways, this wasn't drawn to exact dimentions in terms of the wheel base and location of the pistons. The look a little odd being in front of the smoke box the way they are. But that is because this proposed On18 (O scale models on N gauge track) locomotive uses a Bachmann N scale 0-4-0 Docksider chassis. Aside from that everything else I believe is spot on! Including the 10ft scale length from endbeam to endbeam.

My rendition here is slightly different from the magazine version. Mine has a typical Porter type diamond stack and I gave it a larger headlight. According to the drawings in the 'Gazette' the roof is simply flat, so I desided to give it more of a curved one typical on larger Porters of it's time.

Eventually I'll update this with a rear and front veiws/elevations. Hope you all like!! And yes, it does say "Karnes" on the side!!

Well, the "Kornut" model Porter anyway. I have some better scale drawings of the locomotive and I'll have to scan and post them at some point. This drawing was made using some from an issue of the Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette. (My favorite modeling magazine!) It had an article on a small 18" gauge Porter and that was what inspired me to create a tramway to add to my eventual On30 layout. Though instead of it being 18" gauge I elected to model On20. Plus it has a better historical continuity since my layout theme is set in the arid desert of Arizona copper mining.

Though I have since switched from On18 gauge to On20. (O scale on HOn3 gauge track)

I just don't have a clue as to how to build it!

Bahaha, brilliant! The T-boiler in there is just about the cutest thing ever. She really does look like a cartoon, albeit a really good one. (AFTERTHOUGHT: IN FACT, she reminds me of this: [link] O.o ) The tiny leetl wheels are adorable, and even the cylinders in front of the smokestack look "right." What a neat model it'll be!

That actually isn't a T Boiler, that's the steam dome!

And I can see what you mean with the loco in the link.

Aha, giant steam dome! XD Even better. And festooned with greebles, too!

gunslinger87 In reply to Atticus-W [2011-01-25 01:53:23 +0000 UTC]

"greebles"?

Well it's not exactly a "giant" steam dome, it's a REALLY tiny loco! It's only 10ft long!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Atticus-W In reply to gunslinger87 [2011-01-25 02:16:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, proportionately giant, then. Everything is relative.

And greebles: funny little bits of plumbing and parts with no readily-discernable function, most often found on steam locomotive boilers.

Ah, thanks for clearifying!

I want to try and make a number of these in On20. Though I'm not sure what I could use in terms of a frame or chassis. I've considered using a Backwoods Miniatures' Sn3 Porter kit and modify that to run on HOn3 gauge track. And for roughly $160 it would be a HUGE issue finacially, one I have the finances. (was that an oximoron?)

However I've also elected to have 1 or 2 On20 shays on my tramway!

gunslinger87 In reply to Atticus-W [2011-01-25 02:33:57 +0000 UTC]

I've been talking with a lot of guys on both the On18 and On20 groups and what I'm hearing is that, even after being remototred, they are not the best performing chassis. So I'm looking into other options, shy of scratch building.

gunslinger87 In reply to Atticus-W [2011-02-01 19:23:53 +0000 UTC]

The thing is that I'm not totally agains scratch building, I'm going to HAVE to do that for the body shell! But the frame and motor are what puzzle me.

I could probably make my own frame and what not, it's just I don't have the tools, meterials, nor the experience to do so. Then the other challenge is fitting DCC, which will be a must with ALL my locos.

Atticus-W In reply to gunslinger87 [2011-02-02 19:08:08 +0000 UTC]

I can't claim to have tried it, but maybe you could build a bar frame out of styrene stock. You know, like the stuff that Evergreen Plastic makes.

As for DCC, I am 100% clueless in all regards.

gunslinger87 In reply to Atticus-W [2011-02-02 21:34:19 +0000 UTC]

I would actually like to make a bar frame from brass. It would be far sturdier and less likely to break, God forbid that anything would happen. Like what happened to Sam's 772. Shame really, what happened there.

Anyway, I don't know all that much about DCC either, aside from the the motor NEEDS to be completely isolated, electronically speaking.

Atticus-W In reply to gunslinger87 [2011-02-02 22:20:19 +0000 UTC]

Hm... brass would certainly be solid. O.o Wouldn't be too hard to do either, I suppose, especially for a small engine. Making some sort of jig would probably help with the soldering.

gunslinger87 In reply to Atticus-W [2011-02-02 22:53:07 +0000 UTC]

Ideally I'd like to mill out a frame and have a "Slot and Tab" arraingment so it all fits together firmly, then solder it.

Well the body shell, I still plan on using a Bachmann chassis.

simulatortrain In reply to gunslinger87 [2010-12-16 03:29:06 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but you pretty much only have that 0-4-0ST, and it's not much bigger than an N chassis.

Last I checked, "Critters" are usually gas-mechanical type locos. But I recon the term can be applied to this loco!

I hope I can build it someday soon. It would make both an excelent, charming locomotive and a VERY pleasing flat car load!!

gunslinger87 In reply to PaxAeternum [2010-12-15 06:25:22 +0000 UTC]

And perhaps a live steam 7/8n2 version. Possibly.

Still need to work on some On18 rollingstock though. I have a water car, drill bit car, the flat car you've already seen. I'm tinkering with the idea of an explosives/dynamite car. A fuel car and a riding car/caboose.

I'm also thinking of a crane car and a few House Cars. I think I should have more. The On18 line's primary use is for hauling mine ore and mining supplies, no passengers. I do want to have some wooden dump cars, but I'm having trouble visuallizing them.

Any suggestons for additional stock?

I was just thinking about starting my own narrow gauge O layout (to save space), but I never thought of making it 18 inches instead of 30. Great drawing, and thanks for the idea!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

gunslinger87 In reply to jawharp1992 [2010-12-13 20:55:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh! And if you do decide to commit to On18 modeling, use "HOn30" scale track. Reason being is that N scale track will have too many ties and not spaced far enough apart. HOn30 track, although technically HO scale, will have the correct sized ties and correct spacing for O scale 18in gauge. The gauge between the rails is no different than N gauge.

gunslinger87 In reply to jawharp1992 [2010-12-13 20:44:43 +0000 UTC]

Sure! not a problem!!
I'll be posting more sometime soon. (I hope) I still have quite the roster to draw!

I plan on focusing my modeling efforts in On30, but I'd like to have an 18in gauge line to service the mines one my eventual layout and bring ore to the 30in gauge trains. I may consider making an On18 mini layout as well until I get around to my On30 one.
