I can see that she's laying in a bed, but she also reminds me of the primordial Goddess Nix from Greek mythology, the Goddess of darkness. It's sort of like she's in eternal sleep, but still able to rake her blanket of darkness around the world as night starts to set....Helios off in the distance adding a bit of light against her back.....that's what I see.

It's very pretty, even if just a speed painting.

obviously this is rough, however in this piece that fits. the colors you chose also work well, I'd hate to have the dreams she's having. [ shudder ]

some people are just a little to personal for my taste... but I'm admittedly a bit conservative in that regard.

my favorite so far, what are you using?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hakubaikou In reply to Horologe [2008-08-29 22:06:52 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop and a Wacom Intuos 2.

Or did you mean specific tools within Photoshop?

Horologe In reply to hakubaikou [2008-08-30 11:48:32 +0000 UTC]

As far as I'm concerned, I reckon you should put a tutorial on. Just one : ) please.

I think you've got some mad skills, and I'd like to learn more.
Do it with a theme that you can do a lot of experimentation on if you choose to.

Otherwise, keep burning holes into our eyes.
Love the art. : )

hakubaikou In reply to Horologe [2008-08-30 22:40:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I'm very flattered. ^_^

I'm afraid, though, that I won't be making any tutorials because it would be very hypocritical of me considering I strongly dislike them. I find that most of the ones I've seen are quite awful and indirectly encourage mimicry/laziness when an artist really ought to be using their brain more. It's just my personal preference, but it's one I feel pretty strongly about, so I figure it'd be ridiculous of me to do one myself.

That said, I have no objections to doing progression pics without any explanatory commentary. And I have no objections to answering questions about specific things. I think it's fine to let people know what tools I used and roughly how I did it. But as for actually doing something, I feel that the best way to learn is to explore, to figure it out on your own and teach yourself. It's slower than tutorials, sure, but IMO, it's more thorough. ^_^

I try to reply twice, and then it freaks out. Deviantart has become so irritating.

If you won't post a tutorial, would you be so kind as to give me a brief description on how you manage to obtain such pleasing skin tone.

I can get the colours right (most of the time) but I struggle on depth and pores without making the person look old.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hakubaikou In reply to Horologe [2008-09-08 07:30:40 +0000 UTC]

When I'm doing skin, I try not to think in terms of lines. When I'm doing a face, the only areas I'd use actual lines for would be the eyes, the nostrils, and the line between the upper and lower lip. Everything else, I try to define via colors/shading rather than lines. I find that if you try to define by lines, that's when people look old, because they interpret the lines as wrinkles.

I don't even think about pores. I don't get that detailed. In fact, sometimes, the less detail you have, the more realistic a face looks. If you ever study portraits done by John Singer Sargent, you'll see that he really doesn't go into a huge amount of detail when he paints faces, and yet he's got some of the most wonderfully realistic portraits. I look at his artwork a lot, and I try to study how he does his faces, since I love his style.

When I do skin, I mostly start with a base color that's slightly darker and warmer than what I want the final skin tone to be. Then I color over that with a lighter, colder color. I often (but not always) build up from dark to light.

I posted a progression of a face here: [link] I don't know if you can tell, but I don't really go crazy with lines or details on it. Some CG artists do go into such detail, and they can get some awesome results, but I personally don't have the patience for it.

I don't draw individual eyelashes or eyebrow hairs. I try to get depth by shading and coloring wide areas, and I try to keep from using lines. (Like the cheeks in the progression pic, for instance. That's done by coloring, not by lines.) I also avoid over-smoothing the skin. I find that if you smooth it out too much, it ends up looking like plastic.

I find it difficult explaining things, to be honest. Did that help at all? If not, I can try another way.

It does help, and so did your guide lines.

I am very impressed, and will start immediately trying to make use of that lovely 'guide'.

I will send you the link of my attempt soonest I can : ).

And thank you very much, I appreciate it so much.

Do you think I could invite you on facebook. I log on more often, and so maybe we could discuss other things further in depth. Not all just art related. : )

Yay! Glad it was somewhat helpful. ^_^

I actually don't have a facebook page. I never got one because I don't want to have to give out my real name. Plus my friends keep wanting me to get one which just makes me NOT want to get one even more. I'm stubborn that way. ^_^ But feel free to send me a DA note instead.

Looks like it will have to remain that way then. Sad, but it's not up to me.

I will, and thank you very much for everything.

Do you use a graphics tablet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hakubaikou In reply to Horologe [2008-09-18 05:02:31 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I use a 9x12 Wacom Intuos 2 for my desktop computer and (less often) a 4x6 Wacom Intuos 3 for my laptop.

Oh man, I remember the days when I didn't have a tablet and drew with a mouse. The pictures came out okay enough, but my hand would cramp up so badly. Ugh!

Horologe In reply to hakubaikou [2008-09-20 12:04:52 +0000 UTC]

LOL, I know what you mean, and it takes way to long.
Alas, I have to wait anyway. Hopefully one day I'll get mine.
Please send me the names of some of the entry level models, and move up. Or even a link with a price list would be nice.

I've tried googling some, but I end up wasting my time on many useless pages.

Wacom is by far the favorite brand of tablets for most artists I know. Their products are of excellent quality, and their customer service is excellent. I have an old Intuos 2 model tablet that has worked beautifully for years, and I have a smaller Intuos 3 tablet that I use with my laptop. They're very dependable.

Wacom has several different models of tablets. They're all good. It just depends on how hardcore you want to get with them.

I really like how it looks like she's pulling night over the skies....or...over the something XD
The colors are lovely. There's something about her skirt though, it stands out to me. I'm not sure if in a good way or bad way though so that's probably not very helpful I'm not sure, everything blends so nicely. Maybe it blends too smoothly? o.O; But considering it's speedpaint goodness it's awesome-sauce

hakubaikou In reply to Neobakeneko [2008-08-29 09:04:45 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, thanks for the note on the skirt. Yeah, there's a reason this is staying in scraps. ^_^

I wouldn't knock it though, it's very well done, especially for the time frame
And remember, you originally put "Illusion" in scraps and look how much love it got

And yeah. Ha! The attention Illusion got really blows my mind. I'm still not sure what people see in it. It was a 3 hour quickie done from a breakfast bowl. Go figure. ^_^
