Description As if the world needs yet another mermaid pic. Heh.

This one sat around in my Unfinished folder for a while before I got back to it. I know she's kind of dark, but I wanted to keep her that way since she's, well, kinda nude....

The usual, done completely in Photoshop, no references.

And, oh joy, my first mature content pic.

I love this. You did a wonderful job of keeping her a dark creature instead of making her a joyous and pretty thing, as mermaids have come to be.

O.O This is a stunning piece. I love your interpretation of the mermaid concept--it seems more realistic. The shadow effects are really fascinating! Thanks for sharing!

Love the way hakubaikou drew the under water scenery, and the way that it is dark and kind of murky. It seems more true to the habitat they would live in.

The world always needs more mermaid pics, at least those of this level of quality. ^_^

My favorite parts are the texture on her tail and the the strong light source.

KeshoRyu [2006-12-14 21:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Wow. I love the shafts of light coming through the water, and I love the scale pattern of her lower half.
I recently did a report on Sirens. But apparently people had different ideas about them, since they couldn't agree on whether they were like mermaids or whether they were half avian.
You know what, whatever. It's an awesome picture. <3

mayshing [2006-11-29 03:20:00 +0000 UTC]

I really like how you did her fins, and the crisp focus on her is very nice...
Two things that bothers me on this image... one is that muddy cliff. Because of the blurred focus you give to it, it becomes a huge muddy shape that competes with her, compositionally its not doing any good to this lovely image.

The second thing is the texture brush you used for the water? (I think it's from photoshop customized brush is it?) Perhaps work a bit more on the texture and stroke handling of the brush, they are a bit too repeatitive and become obvious to me, but that's just a minor problem compare to the cliff.

Hi mayshing. Much thanks for the critique.

Yeah, I've had other people mention the cliff as well. I was trying to make the image so that we're peeping in on her. A bit voyeur-ish. But I think it does tend to be distracting. It's too solid and overpowering.

As for the water, I didn't use a brush for that if you're talking about the waves? I used a round brush and the lasso tool for those. Or are you talking about the plants? I'm not sure.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

mayshing In reply to hakubaikou [2006-11-30 01:50:34 +0000 UTC]

oh~ I thought you were using customized brushes.

Peeping in on her, perhaps make the cliffs edges on both side of the picture more obvious? Right now it's not obvious enough and become just a large shadow. (I noticed some differernces, did you edit the picture since my last comment, or is it just me?) XD I think with the current version I am seeing, the highlight on her helps, and the bottom rocks are more obvious because of the highlight, maybe some highlight on the other side will work too? I don't know... that's upto you to play around and see what's best. Best of luck.

hakubaikou In reply to mayshing [2006-11-30 02:22:23 +0000 UTC]

I used customized brushes on the plants behind her. That's why I was confused. Heehee.

No, I haven't made any changes. I have a rule for myself in that I never alter a picture once I've put my sig on it. Keeps me from tweaking a picture forever and never finishing anything. I've broken the rule once or twice, but I've generally been pretty good about it. It's so hard to resist making changes sometimes, especially when people point out things I hadn't noticed before. Hee!

But I do appreciate crits. I keep them in mind for future works, and they also help me to view my pics in a new light. Thanks so much for pointing things out to me.

Oh, as for the cliffs.... I might've over-blurred them. I drew them with details, but the details all disappeared with the blurring. I love the look of long lenses, and I try to imitate that look with my pictures. Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't. Bleaaargh.

mayshing In reply to hakubaikou [2006-11-30 03:03:52 +0000 UTC]

yeah, lens and focus is rather tricky stuff. I would suggest saving another layer and tweak it until you are happy before you blur it over on the originals.

That's a good rule to have for yourself as an illustrator. For me though, I have the tendency to just not go back to the picture once I am done, (since I grew up as mangaka instead of an illustrator) if I post my in progress picture for critique, then that in progress pic is screwed. After others' vision about the picture come into my brain, I just can't go back to it anymore... It has lost it's purity in that sense. Don't know whether it would be the same for you, but that's how I would understand your take on not correcting the picture once it's done.

The lighting in this as I would assume those who have commented before me, which I haven't read I'm afraid, have said is rather well executed. The light catching the 'waves' of hair, quite a spectacle.
