It's a bit amazing how such a simple gesture such as applauding Granny Smith in "Family Appreciation Day" is enough to make fans thing so much better of Silver Spoon. Suddenly, of the two bullies, she's the one that's not-so-bad in the eyes of the viewers.The show has a history of letting its antagonists find redemption, after all, so I really can't blame the audience for looking for signs of it in two of the most persistent ones they see. And it certainly makes a good bit of sense, what with Silver Spoon seeming more like a follower of mean girl Diamond Tiara rather than the main instigator. Certainly those two will eventually have to grow out of being pointlessly cruel, won't they?
Doesn't look like it's set to happen in Season 4 though, judging by the Comicon animatics...

All that because a filly enjoys a history lesson in class. Even Diamond groaned in acceptance that she was one upped in that episode, begrudgingly accepting and ducking away, almost as if hoping no one will connect the dots. Course, her rivalhood frienimy AB was not about to let that one go. SS never really showed signs of 'the follower' in S1 with her openness and being first to get her cutie mark, how DT speaks of SS's achievement amiably and then to her own aquisition.
One Bad Apple Silver Spoon was quite mean. In fact, if you watch whose milkshakes got thrown at the CMC, Diamond's milkshake was the only one that didn't get thrown. Diamond was also the first to walk away at Sweetie Belle thinking that she'd actually waste her time beating up the filly, which Spoon caught and quickly followed. Diamond clearly was putting on airs. She liked the float, she rolls her eyes at the event yet finds a comfy place with best view. Girl just wants to be pals with the CMC possibly but just has too much pride to simply 'stoop' to their levels.
Who knows, they do things out of spite a lot of times, but Diamond on her own has shown she's got what it takes to work well with others and is accepting of blankflanks even so long as they don't join Apple Bloom's 'Choas Crusaders" who even unleashed Discord onto the world.
These two are just BPFF's and there is no need for them to 'redeem' themselves to anything. They haven't hurt anyone or brought eternal chaos to the world. They just have high standards and come from a wealthier side which makes them think they're just better then the rest.
Silver Spoon has a Silver Tongue and it can pierce deeply. Diamond is just manipulative and wants things done her way, she loves being right and quick to seek Cheerilee for confirmation on her held beliefs like in Cutie Pox.
To each their own. Personally I don't see Silver Spoon ever leaving Diamond, she doesn't have to. She's her friend and will tell it like it is if Diamond steps out of line as she would expect Diamond to do as well. These two love confident ponies. They loved Babs Seed. They all spent two weeks hanging out with a blank flank who was related to Apple Bloom. TWO WEEKS. And most of the stuff Babs did was all in babs' head in what she thought would impress DT and SS when they could of done what Diamond did later that episode, ignore the CMC and carry on with her business.
Now in S4 Silver Spoon is the first to say something most cruel and viscous. There goes those reformists. Silver Spoon is gonna break some forced beliefs all due to her cute design. Even in fanfiction no one does anything with Silver Spoon, she's always depicted as weak minded and having been beaten or forced in some way to obey Diamond and having to be mean as a result. People are so delusional... But, props to those couple authors out there that have been trying to show us sides of Silver Spoon beyond some helpless weak minded child with no will of her own. "Hungry" I believe gives a lot of fun and interesting look to what most love about Spoon and while it does go the redemption route, possibly, it's done in a very character building way. Best of all it takes us through the seasons too.
Bleh, I typed too much. I strongly believe Diamond has a good side, we just never get to see it due to all the airs she puts on. She's no saint, but she's not some villain either. Let's just hope we see some closure for these two before the series' end.
Love the smile and the hint of smugness in her eye. Sorry about the rant, my mind jumps around a lot. I just wish people would stop picking on children, Diamond gets treated worst than Sombra when she in fact has more character in her right hoofsie than all the side characters we've seen, right up there with Discord and Chrysalis imo. You just gotta open up to it.

I find it rather interesting how the two get treated differently. The same episode that has Silver clapping shows Diamond's very obvious adoration of her father. Yet Spoon is considered good, while Diamond is still considered to have no redeeming qualities. Beyond that, people overlook just how much stuff Silver Spoon instigates. I'm actually hoping for an episode where Silver Spoon takes the forefront of the bullying and Diamond gets a clapping. Something to firmly establish the two as good friends because they're alikes (friendship is magic!), as well as equals.
Mind you, I do hope both ponies come around... but not before the final season (or the creation of a CMC spin-off). As antagonists, they get lines and such. If they weren't that, they'd be reduced to background ponies. I wouldn't want that for either one of the terrible twosome.

Oh, and on the infamous clapping scene: another aspect I find interesting about it is how people use that to see her as being better, while ignoring one big implication, that being that Spoon claps because she has a mind of her own and isn't afraid to show it. And this doesn't break up her friendship with DT. Meaning it shows she isn't a follower, and all the times she's picking on the CMC, it is because she enjoys it, because if she didn't, she'd speak her mind. Of course, even Twist laughs at the CMC's expense. (Seriously, watch the opening part of Return of Harmony.)
Of course, my view is biased because I like the idea of the two as best friends, loyal to each other. They're jerks and make life hard for the CMC, but I love what they bring to the show together, and the immense sympathy they can generate for the CMC despite whatever stupid thing the CMC are about to do

I also recognized it from the beginning that Silver Spoon is just a follower of Diamond Tiara.
She never really does anything.
But, as the S4 Sneak Preview shows, this will change in S4.......

Oh yeah she did do that. But from the start I have always thought that spoon was simply just a follower, doing what Tiara did just so she would not be shunned herself. That is why I would definitely like to see a test of Tiara and Silvers friendship in season four where Silver temporarily loses her cutie mark. Here we will see how good of friends they are, and if Tiara is the brat I think she is She will shunned Spoon while the CCC will be the heroic angels to the rescue. and although it does not seem like it because of the animatics that we have seen Harwicks-art remember they have only shown three episodes.

thank you for doing Silver Spoons Portrait, i too am also dissappointed from the comic con animatic, that showed Silver taking an active role in bullying Scoots. i was hoping she would be redeemed.

I'd certainly like for these two to eventually come around - and I agree, Silver Spoon at least definitely has the potential to do so. I, too, consider her more of a follower than an instigator (unlike Diamond Tiara); perhaps she was even teased about being a "blank flank" herself in the past. I hope she'll come around eventually, although as long as she stays around Diamond Tiara, I don't really see it happening. DTI will quickly put an end to any attempt on Silver Spoon's part to better herself.
All this isn't to say that I think Diamond Tiara herself is just evil for the sake of evil, BTW - not that I think that category is usually appropriate, anyway, doubly so for a foal. I imagine that she, too, is resorting to bullying others for a reason (schneelocke.deviantart.com/art… comes to mind, for instance), but she's taking a more active role than the passive Silver Spoon who's merely being pushed over the edge by Diamond Tiara.
Well, maybe they'll outgrow it eventually - if only when they grow up. I don't expect the show to show this, anymore than I expect it to show the CMC actually finding their cutie marks, but OTOH, the show's surprised me before with the amount of character development going on. So who knows.

Yeah, I'd like to see her without Diamond Tiara and see what she's like then. "Ponyville Confidential" already showed that DT is in bitch mode all the time, but yeah. "Family Appreciation Day" is where Silver Spoon started to seem a little nicer.
Maybe she'll hit a realization or something in Season 4, as the animatic shows them making fun of what is possibly a real disability for Scootaloo.

I agree that Silver Spoon seems to be nasty primarily because she's friends with Diamond Tiara, who in turn has it in on Applebloom and the others. (And even Diamond Tiara isn't completely rotten; in the same episode, you can see that she genuinely loves her dad.)
