Battle of Lechfeld on 10th August 955 was one of the most defining events for western Europe and the biggest triumph of the legendary German Emperor, Otto the great. Some scholars name it ''die Geburt der Deutschen Nation'' (eng: the birth of the German Nation). since Otto's victory over Magyars didn't only established his position as Emperor of East Francia but it also made Germans the most powerful nation of western Europe during the early medieval ages.The battle was a pure cavalry struggle, Otto gathered an army of Β about 10,000 German heavy cavalry from Swabia, Bavaria, Bohemia, Lorraine, Saxony etc. and faced a numerically superior army of light Hungarian horse archers.

Oh, besides: Otto was king at that time. He wasn't crowned (Roman) emperor until 962.

This is some really excellent work!!! Indeed around this century the german identity,
apart from the old-germanic one was born, tho some can argue about if it came already
earlier, at the treaty of Verdun 843 or around the reign of king Heinrich, Ottos father.

Thx a lot, the docu you shared was the main reason why i chose to draw a work about this battle. Battle of lechfeld didn't only save the identity of Germans but it was the most significant event for the course of history of Western europe, at least in the early medieval ages.

Yes, Germanic people have always been kinda a border between western Europe and eastern nomads, since invasion of huns. And during Mongol invasion it was again the ''Deutsche Ritter'' who pushed them back!

Not in my history book... A Polish-German army was beaten decisively by the Mongols at Liegnitz. The Hungarians under BΓ©la IV could eventually stop their advancement into Europe.

Europeans suffered many defeats against Mongols, and mostly even with numerically superior armies, Sobuta and Jete both were two of greatest generals of Genghis khan. The invasion of Magyars in early medieval ages was nothing compared to the catastrophic Mongol invasions of Europe, since Mongol army was well trained,equipped and experienced as they reached Europe.
But you are right, the Order of Teutonic night played a major part in forcing Mongols out of Western Europe!

Thx man, yeah light cavalry can be effectively used against heavy cavalry for a long time. I guess mongols were the only ones who managed to do that!
