Description These guys are very dedicated. They will stand in one spot all day chanting holding that donation bowl. I can"t help but give them money whenever I see them. This particular monk was standing near Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto in the rain.

Kyoto, Japan.

The monk oozes character, but I gotta say it's the background that trapped me. It's gorgeous.

Wow... Great pic, man. Their culture is just great, pure peace.

By the way, how are those hats they wear named? I just want one of those T_T

heeeeman In reply to OmegaKensei [2009-06-09 01:47:56 +0000 UTC]

They are called Conical hats, and arn't exclusive to monks, farmers wear them too, very stereo-typical. You can buy them fairly easily in Japan, but if you ever do buy one, don't buy them in tourist shops, too expensive

Wow, thanks man. Been trying to find some cool character wearing one of those but haven't found any (Aside from Itachi, or lots of Monks). Thanks again

Why would you want to be a monk?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

want3d222 In reply to heeeeman [2009-05-21 15:17:19 +0000 UTC]

I want to find the truth and real peace in me.
I'm very restless and sad now and I want to be a better person to others.

If I'm not understand everything wrong, monks search it, the harmony and life.

And monks can be near nature. Just like here, in my homeland, Finland. Here nature is near too. Forests, rivers, lakes, meadows. It's very cosy to me.

Like in this picture... look at his shoes... that's brilliant I would enjoy that Nice little rain, cold air and just sandals, cape and some kind of hat or what ever it's called. Simple and nice.

MindSouldBody In reply to Beta9 [2011-09-29 06:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Buddhists monks are not allowed to work to make food on their own (i.e. Farming crops or herding cattles, etc). They are allowed to BEG. But this is not begging in normal form. They are allowed to beg and accept whatever one may give them. They will not ask for anything and even if they can't get anything from anyone, they have to take it as a gratitude. Being humble is the core teaching behind begging.
It originated in hinduism and the sanskrit word for this form of 'begging' is called Madhukori (Maa-Dhuu-Koo-Rii). It's not begging because they are poor and need food to survive. It's begging to lower yourself to be humble and be generous to whatever you may get from anyone.
