Description Here's to all of you who think I don't know how to make bgs. You're absolutely right. Ha!

Hmmh. Now it has a bg, but I'm not at all sure. The pony's lovely, I think, but the bg... I just don't know.

I might be doing this all over again, so comments more than appreciated.

(Oh, you just gotta love that title! )

//EDIT. And I know that coniferous trees aren't allowed in a grove, but oh well... It's not the only mistage in this.

Possibly one of the pieces in the Calendar Project. (Check my journal.)

//EDIT2. Please keep in mind that this isn't probably the version that'll end up being showcased. The bg stinks.
I'm either doing it all over again or fine-tuning this one (needs more details and contrast, at least).

//EDIT3. The horse in this piece (the b&w version from my Scraps) is now showcased in ~Project-Dream 's gallery with a short info on Finnhorses. More on Finnhorses on finnpride.info , currently under construction.

Gorgeous horse! I know what you mean about backgrounds, I'm terrible at them but I'm about halfway through a picture that needs one so I'm going to have to improve I like the texture and shine on the horse

The horse is AWESOME!!! I think the bg just needs some more fine details. It's like a cross between a sharp, clear background and the blur from a camera that's focused on the foreground instead of the background. If you just sharpen the bg more and really get the light/dark contrast in there with the details, I think it'll help .

I have a hard time with backgrounds too . I think I'll try to just work on regular landscapes to get the feel for them some more.

Thanks.
Yes, details are missing. Now I'm just fishing for ideas if the bg is good or if it needs to be completely redone (like transformed into a lake scenery or something).

What kills me, is the fact that I started out as a landscape painter, but I can't produce even a half-decent bg...

My problem is that once I get the main part done, my impatience kicks in that makes it really difficult for me to finish backgrounds .

The contrast between path and grass, and how it transits may be a bit too harshly defined. I happen to like the sketchy feel the horse has as it's very realistic and yet not overly realistic to the point it hurts my eyes. Impressive painting, I must say.

Bongasin tästä musta-valkea version Ht.netissä, mutta tämä on kyllä tuplasti hienompi värillisenä.

Hevosen väritys on uskomattoman ihana, kaikki piirteet tulevat hyvin esiin (tykkään erityisesti vasemmasta takasesta :3). Tausta on myöskin onnistunut, sopivan yksinkertainen korostaakseen hevosta, muttei kuitenkaan liian yksinkertainen.

Voisinkin melkein päivittää alustavan listan tuonne kalenteri-journaliin...

Hee, samat sanat :3 Seuraavan kerran voisi vaikka petrata eniten taustaan, jos vaikka onnistuisinkin tälläkertaa

(Miusta tää on niin ihanan lämpimän sävyinen kuva, ehdottomasta jollekkin lämpimälle kuukaudelle ^^,)

Beautiful! I think the background's fine, but if you wanted to enhance it, maybe you could add some more detailed bits of grass and some wildflowers near the path, or blur it slightly so that the pony contrasts more? I dunno, I'm not very good at backgrounds myself

helekri In reply to sovereign [2007-01-19 21:16:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm definitely going to add details and finetune the bg IF I'm going to keep the one I have now. If I do it all over again, there's no point in finifhing it, as I'm too lazy for extra work. I'm not good with bgs either...

Wonderfull as usual.I think the bg looks almost as amazing as the horse in it.But i guess everyone's taste is different i just can't inmagine how anyone can think it's bad but i suppose an artists is it's own worst critic.

helekri In reply to Honda-Thoru [2007-01-19 21:29:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Well, I kinda like the horse, but the bg is rubbish, at least because it lacks details and refinements...
It's always nice to know I can do better. Being completely satisfied with a piece kills the strive to do better.

very nice! it's quit difficult to paint a bg! I also asked *balaa for help (a sketch) on the drawing wich is coming up (the tiger 'sneak preview' in my gallery) He's going to run in the snow (it's a gift for ~AngelsSoul a very good friend of mine and we went to happy feet together, that's why I want to make him run in the snow, to remind her of the movie )

anyway, back to this piece... as you might revise this I think it's useful to give tips to make it even more pretty (it's looking quit handsome already and last time you said you wanted critics...)

The horse is absolutely beautiful, but to make him even more 'realistic' or less sketchy (wichever word you prefer ) you could take a somewhat larger brush on a low opacity and use the eyedropper to make the whole drawing more smooth... to make the color of his coat flow, if you get what I mean... (if you don't get it, that's my fault as I don't explain it right haha... don't hesitate to say you don't get it )

Make some hairs stand out of his tail and mane and make some 'whiskers' (only visible for those who take the time to take a close look, details like that are rewarding )

For the background... I think the path to grass change is a bit ..... sudden ...... try to look up some photos and use it as a ref, it will look gorgeous...

All this critics... you would almost think I don't like the piece

but the truth is, I like it very much! and this is a !

Random ramblings and crits is the best mix.

About the blending. It would certainly make the horse look more realistic, if I knew how to stop in time. I don't know if you have seen my older works, but blending was my main technique. I'm slowly trying to break free from overblending and thus making pieces look more like painting and less like plastic. Question really is, do I want to go back to blending things and/or go after more realistic look? I'm still undecided.

As for the details, there is already some but they don't carry out quite well in this resized version (original is around 3500 pixels wide). I think I should add some more, when I get into finishing the bg.

Which leads us nicely into the last point. You really don't think I should do something else for the bg? Just go and finish this one (details etc)?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't know if you should do anything else for a bg... it's always hard to make those... *sigh*

and you are right... you shouldn't make your horses look too plastic... I'll see what your decisions on this one are going to be

I wholeheartedly agree!
I think I'll leave the horse much as it is, but I'll be definitely retouching the bg, there's no details and not much contrast or anything...
