I knew it was you who made this! I was looking trough your gallery
for this ^^
I have question, how did you make these? I got myself a motorbike chain
and I was wondering how you did this?
If you can give any advise Β
And I finally got a change to do blacksmithing! I have few blades hanging around
already Β
And also great work on those! ^^ I guess that is your logo on the blade?

Yes I did them, the moose hoof is my logo But you can also view it as a kite shield with a cross in it if you like it better.
Ok, so the easiest way is to put the chain in a stainless container, fill the empty space with steel dust and weld it shut. Heat the package to welding temperature and beat the crap out of it as a regular damascus. That's it.

Have fun!

Thank you! Β
I was excepting something magical recipe for
a perfect blade but I guess I worried over nothing XD
I thought it seemed like kite shield
I sure do! ^^Β
Again, thank you

Sorry, no magic here. Just science that I don't understand, but can use Just like in old times. Β
Btw, you're welcome.

So it seems
Well, I tried today it It pretty much exploded to pieces
after a while XD Not sure what went so wrong though
Could you have any idea? Β

hellize In reply to BastardFromNorth [2015-02-19 12:35:04 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it had too much heat!
Or you used fancy steels.
If so, use the simplest spring you can find, and mix it or with thin iron straps or with saw blades.

BastardFromNorth In reply to hellize [2015-02-19 13:43:35 +0000 UTC]

To much heat? Damn, I was so close
It was funny though, watching flashes of redΒ
flying next to my face XD
So using only the chain itself is not wise?
Was I supposed to add more metal than those?

hellize In reply to BastardFromNorth [2015-02-19 13:49:22 +0000 UTC]

well, chain has much empty space and that's why it's better to ad some more steel, or your finished damascus might end up like an ementaler

Okay, thanks again Β
I thought I was just supposed to smash it down
and be happy with it
Well, better luck next time ^^
Thanks!

I'd probably have to save up, but how much would both of these go for individually priced? Or have they already been sold? D:

No, these two are still available. The smaller is 65 euro and the larger is 80 euro

Ahh I can work that for the bigger one. I'll have to wait until my next pay check though Hmm. Do you hold items for people until they can pay?

Hello sir! I just wanted to show you the handle I put on the blade I purchased. I couldnt do it by myself so my Grandfather helped me out with it.
Hope its okay for a first go at it.

sta.sh/0vip3yruq1e

Also, some of the design on that particular side of the blade was damaged in the process of putting it on. I had to gently sand the scratches away with some fine grit sand paper but now the reveal is less prominent. I tried looking up home remedy techniques to reveal damaged Damascus but to no avail. Im still new to taking care of things like these and I've been trying my best but I thought I'd just ask you since you know whats up already.

Good day,

Glad to see that you finished it! Hope you and your grandfather had a great time together putting the handle on It has a nice finish on it and I bet it's comfy too. It is much better than my first handle.
If the pattern been damaged, hand sand it graduallyΒ to P600 (the more grades, the better) then mask the handle real good with electricians tape. After the handle is protected, dip only the blade in sulfuric acid (found in car batteries) or ferric chloride. These are the fastest but also the most dangerous ways. If you don't have access to any of the two or you don't want to experiment with hazardous stuff you can use any weak acids too, like common vinegar, but this will take days or even weeks depending on the temperature to bring the blade pattern out.Β
I heard that even coffee can bring the pattern out if you have patience and sand the blade to P2000, but have never tried this one myself.
If you have any other question please feel free to ask, I will answer if I can. Good luck!

I had tried Vinegar and even Lemon juice but they rusted the metal >_< So I guess I gotta get brave and go for the hard core stuff.
Also, I have to use my father's gun oil to keep it nice and rust free, but is there any kind of sealer available that could keep it nicer longer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hellize In reply to Skull-Splinters [2015-10-18 07:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Vinegar takes a lot of time. You dip it in, wait, rub the surface a bit with fine 1200 grit sand paper, you dip it in again and repeat many times!
Hard core stuff works faster, but it also eats the metal more faster so be careful not to ruin it. And more importantly be cautious with the acid gases!!! Ferric chloride is relatively harmless though.
You don't need to use anything on the blade to keep it in top condition, only keep it dry and clean and that's it. But if you want to go for sure, a little gun oil doesn't hurt.

It's possible to make Damascus pattern steelΒ from stuff like motorcycle chains? O.o
I'd seen it being made from old pylon cables, but I honestly thought that bike-chains were impossible to use in forging.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hellize In reply to Gothic-Lycan [2014-05-14 15:10:41 +0000 UTC]

Everything is possible, if you want it hard enough!
But seriously, if a steel has no or very little cromium, than it is ok for damascus.Β

Since we're on the topic of blacksmithing, can you tell me what I would need to set upΒ a small backyard forge?
I really want to take up blacksmithing, in particular armoursmithing and weaponsmithing, but here in South Wales there's nowhere I can learn the trade.
All that I know of smithing is taken from a large number of Youtube videos and various sites that host tutorials.
I have begun to wonder if my bestΒ chance is to simply try my hand at some very basic things and go from there.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

My first very crude attempt were made like this: dig a hole in the ground for fire place, use a hairdrier with a ducktapped vacuum cleaner tube as a blower, get a bucket of coal, get a small hammer for hammerin' (a 1.5-2 kg hammer will do) and get a larger hammer (5 kg or more, bigger is better in this case ) instead of an anvil. Place the large hammer on a lump of wood, secure it with nails and your finished!
Pm me if you have any other question

Neat! You got a much more regular pattern than we did when we tried this. It just looks like a lot of mush, you can at least see some of the old parts on yours.
