Description
The final piece for my class trip to Costa Rica over Wintersession, created the week after our return to sort of "sum up" the experience. Translated, the title reads "keep it and it will grow." It's a kind of self-portrait dealing with personal symbols, and the act of collecting and guarding objects and giving them meaning.Very mixed media sculpture...the bust is paperclay, with real palm roots. The box is a little wooden crate I've had for years. Real monarch butterfly, red seeds collected in Costa Rica, little wooden pedestal, and Brahma cattle teeth (also collected in Costa Rica) bound up in thread. The designs painted on the sides of the box are inspired by the traditional hand-painted ox-carts of Sarchi. Also, the inside of the box is papered with newsprint from the late 1700s...and I will admit that part has no meaning other than being aesthetically pleasing to me. The little necklace is twine with a limpet shell I found on the South Pacific coast.

Thanks so much! So glad you appreciate it. Your fiancee sounds like he has a similar "collector" mindset---does he do any assemblage or collage work? It took me years and years of collecting before I realized I could make art out of what I was doing, though I know some people just like to keep things rather than use them.

My fiance actually does have a lot of cool ideas for some of his 'junk'. Some stuff he just keeps, just to have, though. When we first started dating, and this may be too much info, but I figure you'll find the humor and sentimental value in it.... We used to collect every condom wrapper that we used. When we stopped having safe sex after we got engaged, we decided that we'd make a table out of the wrappers. We still plan to do this. It's a piece of our history. He has so many other ideas, too.
We found some bricks a while ago that were from a building that had been torn down. The bricks had graffiti bits on them. They had been broken down into rubble considering the construction that had been done to the building they once belonged to. Well, we decided to take them and make a lamp with them.
Sorry to ramble, but I think that's why I appreciate your gallery so much.

No problem---I always respond when somebody asks me something, though I definitely don't have time to respond to everyone who comments/favorites and I think a lot of artists who get many messages on here are in the same boat. Doesn't mean they don't appreciate it, though!

Dude, you really have some awesome ideas. This immediatly reminded me of an inside joke my fiace' and I have... It's a long story, but once I read more about it I'm amzed at the sentimental mindset you have. Everything seems to have meanin, which also reminds me of my fiance'. He cllects old rusty spray cans an weird old 'garbage' because he finds astory in everything he does.
I love that about him, and this piee put me right there with him. Great work!

Pretty small, actually. The box is no more than six or so inches high. So, plus head and roots, it's probably not over a foot tall.
