I believe they should be treated with respect, that anyone who hurts them deliberately needs to be punished as harshly as if they laid a finger on a human, and I DO own pets- why? Because saving a kitten from burning to death in the hot 112 degrees sounded far better than letting her cook, or throwing her into a kill shelter.
Pampering her as an inside outside cat/family member sounded MUCH more appealing to the poor girls lively-hood as opposed to letting her die of heat or thirst.

I believe owning a pet shouldn't be part of animal rights
It's owning wild/not domesticated animals that should not be part of animal rights
