Description As you can plainly see this is not an ordinary chess board. This is what is known as Byzantine Chess or round chess. When I was first thinking of building this table I thought I had come up with a rather brilliant original idea. However with a little research I discovered that a few other had already come up with the idea before me. I still think I've one upped them though since this is the first board I know of that wasn't just made of cheap plastic.

Rather than the pieces being lined up along an edge the standard chess set up is split in half and then folded backwards. So the king and queen go on the inner ring of the board. The Bishops go on the second ring, Knights on the third, and Rooks on the fourth. The pawns then Go on all four rows surrounding the upper pieces. This set up now requires the players to battle on two fronts instead of one.

This is fantastic! I was also going to suggest a darker finish, but noticed your comment to someone else suggesting the same thing. Clear would be nice, but maybe a cherry finish or light mahogany might work better than the dark walnut? I also think it would look a bit more balanced with the center hollowed out just a bit. Enough to give it a nice indent that isn't too deep. I could see the appeal of calling checkmate and pushing your opponent's king into "the pit"

Oh man, and I can't manage regular chess! The need to defend two sides appeals though.

A dark Varnish would really pull it off

You know I thought that very same thing. So I put a nice dark walnut varnish on and you know what? It looked like shit. So I went back in the next day and spent 6 hours sanding it all back off. I've decided I'm just going to put a clear coat on it. I'll update the photo when I do, but with the holidays and all it may be a few weeks.

The pieces are all so great on this board. I can't believe you made that table yourself, with that inlay so well done. It looks like a spider web. This is so unique on many levels - I just love it!!!

Thank you, heh my professor was impressed I'd done the stone inlay so well too. When I had first pitched the idea to him he said it would take me all semester just to cut the tiles perfect enough to make it fit in a circle. Took me like a week
