This has been a long time coming.

When I met Alex, his music was very different. When I was told his latest album would be in the style of his old music, I already knew where this album was going to go as we've been discussing it on and off for years. It was more of an accident this cover happened in the first place. It just so happened that listening to the test tracks, I just had to sketch down all the characters I was hearing to add to the universe. When the topic of a cover popped up, I already had more than enough characters to put into it. In fact, some ideas had to be left out because I simply ran out of reasonable room for it.

The cover is in a sense my subconscious idea of what my childhood in the late 80's felt like, more than what it actually was. I wanted an explosion of primary colors, flashing lights and posing. I knew the Super Sheriff was going to be the main focus and what colors he should have.

Naturally, the Laser Sharks and the humans of tomorrow needed a lot of room. I loved the song and I guess it brought out that hidden desire I've had for years to make a hero team show. I had a vague idea of what they would look like, but actually went through several designs on the cover itself until I sat down and independently sketched a design I felt could work if they were a stand-alone show. I even named them. For the curious, they're: Flash, the speedy blade user with a pulse jet. Blitz, the hammerhead commando that does marine combat. And Breaker, the prism-engine powered metal jaw that punches things until they stop moving.

The nebula-like "Monster man" has an important position story wise, but because of the composition, I had to just allude to the Samurai, who is probably the most complex character I designed. Hopefully all these guys will get a chance to be explored more in the future though.

Finally, I gave the sheriff his own ship, though I added a few variations of previous designs in there as well.

As with all my covers, there's secrets to be found, but I'll leave that vague for now. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out all things considered. I prefer to have lots to read into when you look at something, and I think I've got plenty to search for there.
