Description The last of the lost Exalted pages drawn last year for Udon. You can start with the first page here .

Yes, it's a bit of a cliffhanger. Check out the collected version of Exalted from Udon Comics to find out what happens next!!

So that's that for now... we've skipped over about half the pages I drew, but that's largely because they contain spoiler details and such that it wouldn't be kind to share just now. I'm not sure when the book will be released (keep in mind, my pages aren't the ones appearing in it, but the script should be the same), but if you keep an eye up over on

then I'm sure you'll hear about it. Check 'em out anyway, if you haven't before, and you'll find a fine collection of art and illustration.

What materials did you use?

An ancient graphire 4x5 tablet and Manga Studio EX. This was one of the earliest pieces I did in that software, I think I was still trying out the vector toolset (which I've since left to the side, it's not for me).

A year or so before this (and forever prior to that), I was all about the boards and ink. This is one of those pieces that rides the cusp of my switch to digital tools.

this should have been in the comic. you know. I really loved the art. I just wished the story could have been just as good. no offense if the writer is a close friend of yours.

I was a third-party subcontract WFH monkey when I did this, so I'm not affiliated with the creators or publisher at all. I'd love to do some work for Udon (so would a lot of people), but I can't speak to anything regarding the comic... I was way too far down the ladder to do more than take instruction from my agent and produce artwork for him to deliver.

I'm always glad to hear people like what I did with the script, though. Makes me want to do more comics.

I just wanted to say somewhere that I love your framing style. I wish more comic artists understood that square framing is the death of comics. It is nice to see someone doing dynamic comics for a change.

I dunno 'bout "the death of comics"... square framing makes for excellent readability, completely removing the concern that the story flow might be confusing. So long as the content within the frames is well-composed, the frame may become nearly invisible.

I'm of the mind that plain frames are ideal when you want the reader to focus on dialogue or characterisation. More dynamic framing comes into play when you want to support dynamic compositions, usually revolving around action or key moments. In addition, by setting a standard wherein the framing is relatively static, it gives those moments when you break loose that much more impact. The reader probably won't even notice, but by setting a subtle effect like that you can intensify their sense of reaction to the action.

Or at least that's the theory, anyhow.

Will Eisner is king of frame composition, to my way of thinking.

I don't know. Eisner is okay, but he is very static.

Really, the Penni's spoiled me early as far as comics go. Elfquest was a bit dynamic when it came to boxing. If I had to point to the person that when I had returned to comics that really spurred my love, it would have been Casey Jones, though. He has a very dynamic layout of boxes, and rarely if ever uses straight laced tight boxes.

While I know Eisner is suppose to be good, and I know the Spirit is a good story, it just does not thrill me to look at it.

Man, you ain't been reading the right Eisner stories. He was a groundbreaker, before him it quite often was all straight-laced tight boxes. Eisner frames with the environment, the theme, sometimes even the title of the story. It may be subtle, but it's more powerful for all that.

If every page uses a dynamic layout, then that becomes the flat standard. Then, when you need to pop the reader one in the eyes, your struggle to make the panels stand out is that much more difficult.

How long does it generally take you to draw one of these pages? Some of the lines look like they were quickly drawn. One stroke and you're done, and yet you still have a lot of detail, the positions all look really good (Though, the way he's standing in the second last panel looks kind of odd, his right arm looks like it's in an uncomfortable position), the lines are clean, and you still have backgrounds (more on other pages than this one).

I saw from another comment that you use Manga Studio, and you complimented it heavily for lineart and such. Is it worth the $300 to get? Of course, I'm also no professional, and I do have Photoshop, but if it's worth it, it may be a good investment.

Inkthinker In reply to IHMPCYPAWB [2007-04-09 06:12:33 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the shot, but on the average each page took between 6-8 hours, depending on detail and redraws and such. I'm very focused on contour lines rather than light values, mostly because of my background as a cartoonist and animator.

Manga Studio is pretty awesome, but that $300 pricetag can be a bit daunting. It's cheaper than Photoshop, though... really, I think it's worth it if you're doing a LOT of line-art, drawing comics or interior illustrations for books... if your focus is more in full-color painted work then Photoshop or Painter is more your bag, but for drawing comics it's hard to beat.

There is the $99 Debut version, which is still pretty strong stuff... that may be enough to start with, and it may be that you can upgrade eventually for the difference in cost if you find that you're using the software a lot.

It's also useful to know that Manga Studio and Photoshop are cross-compatible, since Manga Studio can both import and export PSD files. So you can use each for their particular advantages.

You know, you almost have to admire the testicular fortitude of Dragon Blooded. If I caught wind of a guy cutting like ten people in half with one attack with a sword about seven feet long, I'd stay home.

You allways have really amazing movements and pantamime

only thing i really don't like (totaly personal prefrence) is the last pannel ... Cus, its not that its not drawn well, or that it doesn't work, want to see more of a shoulder drop cus the shoulder line is very simular to the last pannel. I just want to see more of the force of that arrows hitting him.

and as allways SOLID line art.
