Description One more winter picture.
The ruins of the castle in my hometown Elbingerode/Harz (Germany).
The playground of my childhood.
The castle was build about 800 years ago and is in ruins since 1753. It burned down in a huge fire together with large parts of the city. Now it is used as a park.

The picture was taken from a window of my parent's house.

You are right it's not meant to have a focal point and I am not trying "to get something across". I don't think every picture needs a message. Sometimes I think it's enough to transport some vague impression.

Okay. I was just giving you my opinion. Simply that the photo loses its beauty when there's 1000 things to look at.

Cool! Now that's a view I wouldn't mind having out my bedroom window! The snow makes it look so smooth.

There are some lovely strong bright colours in this that just jump out at you in contrast with the snow. Your parents are lucky, I wish I had a castle outside my window

To make you even more envious, some years ago we convinced our town council to name our road "Palace Gardens".

A park out of the ruins of a castle? how cool is that! Very nice. I like the color too!

It's not this unusual, we got more then enough castles and and ruined castles here. There are dozends alone in my county and tens of thousands in Germany.

That's very cool. Most ruins in the US are from Native American sites and are usually protected, and you can't go and climb on the ruins most the time LOL

This is true, south and middle america are full of ancient ruins, (of course most hidden somewhere in the jungle) but in the US these are very rare.

hyenacub In reply to inmc [2009-01-25 11:38:44 +0000 UTC]

Yep yep. : ) Our native peoples didn't really build a lot of durable structures. At least not ones that are that old

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

inmc In reply to hyenacub [2009-01-25 14:11:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, they did, but quite some where intentionally destroyed to erase all traces of their culture.
And a lot of the durable structures who survived 500 years of colonialisation where in fact artificial hills for religious purposes.

But especially in new mexico some impressive and truely ancient cities build by natives survived.

Well, for the purpose of the ruins being around still today...not many left them.

Oh, sure, the mounds; those I have seen. : ) Can't say I have been around much of NM, though. Been through there, but haven't stopped to see the sights. Thanks for the great links!

Wow! What a stunning view! It must be strange and wonderful to run and play in the remains of such an ancient piece of history.

inmc In reply to RoninFox [2008-11-23 13:53:10 +0000 UTC]

it is. But here in Europe people are used to this. You can find a piece of history nearly everywhere just around the corner.
