That's supposed to be a sword beam which is why it explodes upon contact with an enemy or hitting the end of the current scree you're on. That's further proven in Zelda 2 AoL where Link still shoots the beam. ALttP and LA also do that as well and although the anime isn't canon, Link shoots beams then as well.

Thank goodness for regeneration, heh. Anyway, I remember the first time I played the original Zelda; it was my absolute favorite game! For weeks, if not months, I didn't play any other game on the NES. But the coolest part was when I fought Ganon; Ganon could've literally hit me one more time and I would've died, but luckily, the same applied to him lol. I then sat back and relaxed as I enjoyed my well-earned ending... then discovered the Second Quest, and started a whole new game XD
