Description all the pieces I've actually been putting effort into have been crap lately, so here's a sketchbook sketch that I sort of liked.

I want to know what their story is, as I wasn't thinking of one when I drew them...

*Edit* Some reviewers have had lovely suggestions for the story surrounding this pair. One suggestion that seemed creepily appropriate is that they could be Iemon and Oiwa from Yotsuya Kaidan (wiki link --> [link] ) there are some eerie similarities between these two and the animated versions from Ayakashi, which I had not yet watched when I drew this.

They have always reminded me a bit of Sakura and Sasuke as well, perhaps because she looks so miserable? (whoops! my character preferences are showing)

I just wanted to point out, since everyone else has already said what I wanted to about the drawing itself, that the title rhymes:

In the rain
by janey-jane.

They're definitely having problems. He's distant, she's reluctant but she doesn't want to let him go yet; she still loves him, but he's frustrated with her. This is expressed by the fact that she's touching him, but he's turning away and not making any effort to return the gesture of affection.

*wistful sigh*

That's beautiful...I should suggest that other people write the explanations for all of my pieces.

Thank you.

My first thought, since I've been watching the anime Ayakashi lately and have been trying to buy a copy of 'Illusion of Blood' for my dad's bday, is that they're Oiwa and Iemon from the famous kabuki play, Yotsuya Kaidan. They look similar to Amano's chara designs, and Iemon made umbrellas for a living.

Then again, perhaps that story is too bleak for them :/

I like them, particularly the clothes - which look spot-on - and their expressions. He looks stern and she looks subservient, just as they should

The pocket watch is interesting. Unusual for someone in such traditional attire. I'd like a story that somehow involves that. Maybe a more modern-day version of the Yotsuya Kaiden story, the same way Mononoke redid the bake neko? (sorry if that didn't make sense - lots of anime references! )

Woah...*shudders* I hadn't even thought of that...but it's strangely appropriate considering I think I drew this shortly after I finished watching Mononoke.

Also - I had Samurai Champloo on loop for several weeks around the time of this sketch as well, and I think the pocket watch probably came about because I got really intrigued by the intentional blending in of anachronistic elements into a largely traditional setting.

I haven't seen Ayakashi, I love Amano and I've been trying to find a place to watch it for a while now, do you have it in physical form or are you watching it online (and if so where?!).

Thanks for your awesome comment, it makes me want to illustrate a bunch of Japanese ghost stories.

Sorry, me again. Just thought, it really does suit Oiwa's story. Iemon made umbrellas, yet here he's making Oiwa stand in the rain instead of sheltering her. A kind of appropriate allegory.

Strange how you drew this after watching Mononoke, even though you hadn't seen those Ayakashi episodes! And your 'Iemon' looks so much like Amano's. Funny, how things sometimes just fall into place like that.

I just had the chance to watch the Yotsuya Kaidan episodes and...woah...I'm sort of creeped out by my own art now. I think I'll always see these two as Iemon and Oiwa now since the suggestion is so appropriate.

Hehe, glad I could help! Those episodes are very creepy, aren't they? And it's weird how your art illustrated it so well before you had even watched it - almost like a premonition! Creepy...

Here you go: [link]

Eps 1-4 feature Oiwa's story, with character design by Amano, but the best story arc is the one with Kusuriuri, of course (eps 9-11)

Please do illustrate more! What you've done so far looks brilliant - love your stuff!

This is probably because she has red hair (and therefore, isn't Japanese), but it looks like he feels he needs to go somewhere and do something that another Japanese person would understand, despite its risks, but which she doesn't. He's angry and waiting for his traveling companions, and she's come to say goodbye, although she still doesn't understand it. He wants to forgive her before he leaves, but pride is getting in the way, and she doesn't want to cry.

That's the way I see it. Either way, it's beautiful and clearly full of quiet, sad emotion.

oooh, I like it...I wish I could write as eloquently.

This is far more beautiful than anything I could come up with. and "full of quiet, sad emotion" is exactly what I feel when I look at it. Thank you for articulating it!
