Description First in a series of three: I realized that I have a set of prismacolor markers that are just drying out because I've always been a little afraid of them. I also have a tendency to use muted, toned-down tones, and I wanted to force myself to use bright, pure colors.

I pull my clothing and costume design from a bajillion sources that are just sort of a jumble in my head; so I tried to keep note of inspirations behind each outfit, in case anyone finds that sort of thing interesting.

17th c. Dutch floral still-life paintings
Chinese theater/opera
the ridiculousness of the Romantic Era
The texture and color of poppy petals
Mid-16th century Italian portraiture

All of them are so lovely! They are a bit art deco, yes? I absolutely love them. They also remind me of the style of art used on the cover of the Jewels of Westria book. by Patricia-something... i can't find em no more, nad that one was given to me by a friend... it's awesome!

I was reminded of Frida Kahlo when I first looked at this piece. It's mostly due to the eyes, I think for me, her work always features really striking eyes, and that's what your work reminds me of. I just love the contours of her face. Every details makes me want to keep coming back and just taking it in.

I really enjoy the lists of references for this series, because they're captured so well in each piece (especially the "texture and color of poppy petals" one)! Nice job!

The color and texture of poppy petals are almost one in the same. for me the color is so rich and vibrant that looking at them is a tactile experience, they're like visual velvet.

I love portrait poses from the 16th c. That's sort of what inspired how she's holding her hands

Lady, you're awesome *_* .
It's not just a very beautiful drawing per se, but the seamless blending of the different sources and your lines that share that 'something' I love from late XIX century illustration/graphics is just .

I think massive volume is something fashion has been missing for a while now. High fashion has it off and on, but everyday fashion is so boringly fitted and tailored.

I'm really enjoying the recent trend for puffy sleeves and bold shoulders...full sleeves are a delight! Too bad full skirts seem to have been relegated to the costume basket or, as you said, high fashion alone.

Gorgeous! I could immediately tell you got some of the inspiration from this for Renasaisance Italian portrature! The pose and the emotion is just straight from that era. I love this color series!

I think the color of this one came out the most appealing for me. Deep rich red is such an easy color to love - power, fire, passion. I think that's why I wanted to pair it with a kind of innocent look...

Those poppies are simply divine. The sleeves would get a bit... unmanageable, I think... XD OH YOU SILLY ROMANTICS YOU.

I support these color pictures. I think you should do green, orange, and purple, too. AND THEN SILVER AND GOLD AND BLACK AND WHITE AND RUBY AND OLIVE AND VIOLET AND FAWN AND AZURE AND LEMON AND RUSSET AND GRAY AND CREAM AND CRIMSON AND-

yeeeeeah.

haha, I had thought of doing a second series of three with the complimentary colors (orange, purple, green) but maybe with a slightly different overall stylistic theme (melting/dripping stuff instead of windy/flying away stuff? - haven't thought about it much DX

Aw, her lovely hat (hat? Carmen Miranda-esque headdress?) is flying away. Yeah, of course, that makes this more lovely.

And you should not be afraid of color! Because you do it excellently well, chica. Your dresses always make me want to live in those eras/places to wear them.

Goldenspring [2010-06-28 14:33:18 +0000 UTC]

I really like this! the blowing away poppy headdress is especially lovely as is the way the folds of fabric seem to mimic the petals of the flower.

I enjoyed looking through all the sources that you posted and I know what you mean about those prismacolors. There is a fine line between respecting art supplies and actually making them into art.
