Description
after the "keyboard war" of the 2060s died down between the major nuclear powers (china/russia/USA), a warmachine soon took the place of drone mechs, the tactical mech.
Tactical mechs could use their legs and arms to access environments unreachable by most ground combat vehicles. In the southeastern European colonies, in its most mountainous terrain, American TacMechs defend against Russian forces. In such rough terrain it required mech forces to be unsupported in most cases outside of infantry. Air superiority, often enjoyed by America in the past, was much more rare in the 2060s as anti air tech became more efficient and accurate (and much more common as the major powers fought each other). Aircraft designed to skim above the tree line (below radar) were developed to provide air support on the battlefield of 2060.
=the Theodore (teddy) AA variant (on the right)
This mech was upgraded for defense against these new air assets. While the normal Teddy main tactical mech (on the left) was customizable with a wide variety of hand held specialist weapons, it did not have the necessary electronic and sensors suites to detect and target incoming low flying enemies. Instead of creating a new mech, the ARMY invested in a upgrade package for the venerable teddy.
The Teddy-AA has a combo of radar and thermal scanners that would replace the head turret weapons. The arms were removed to add 2 double barreled 35mm auto-cannons (with programmable flak rounds). There became problems with such a heavy weapon system and handling recoil for this MTM (main tactical mech). In order to handle the recoil, and also in helping the mech keep balance, that the arms would normally provide, the Teddy-AA was given heavy jump legs. Jump legs are a hip mounted advanced hydraulic suspension system, it can provide adequate bracing for TacMechs being paradropped. It became soon clear the jump legs could provide many uses outside of its intended purpose. In this case they became bracing legs so that the Teddy-AA can provide sustained fire without toppling itself over, and in the case the mech does fall over it can use the jump legs to get back on its feet (normally arms could help with this, but jump legs are needed since using the gun-barrels to help the mech up has always resulted in damaging its only weapon).
in environments with rough terrain, were noormal AA assets could not traverse, the Teddy-AA could provide much needed accurate firepower. Although not its intended purpose, this variant of the teddy has been used to provide withering fire support against ground targets.
