Description
Louhi is an old evil witch (originally Noita) from Finnish legends, Mistress of Pohjola (Territory of Lapland). This character is famous for her greed, cunning and rancor, but at the same time for her extraordinary magical abilities. In the epic "Kalevala" she is the main antagonist with whom the storylines of all three main characters - the shaman Väinomöinen, the blacksmith-wizard Sappo Ilmarinen and the valiant warrior Ahti Lämmenkäinen - intersect in one way or another. She more than once promises all three characters to give her eldest daughter, a very beautiful but evil Lapland girl, as a wife, in exchange for difficult tasks that are beneficial to Louhi herself. One of these tasks entrusted to the warrior Lämmenkäinen was the hunt for the Hiisi Elk, the magical beast, created by forest spirits. The evil spirit Hiisi and Lempo (the powerful spirit of fertility) created this moose from rotten roots, rotten wood, moss and other similar things, and then breathed life into it. Having spent a lot of time and effort, Lämmenkäinen was still able to catch Hiisi Elk, but could not hold him. The Elk ran back to Lempiolla, into the dense thicket to his creators.
