Description Vammatar is one of the spirits of the underworld (Tuonela), the daughter of the ruler of Tuonela - Tuoni and his wife Tuonetar. She was associated with mutilation, pain and physical suffering, but at the same time she is associated with healing. In Kalevala, Vammatar is one of the spirits whom the mother of the warrior Ahti Lämmenkäinen calls upon to help her, trying to revive the crippled corpse of her son. There, Vammatar is mentioned as the "Maiden of Mutilation", along with her sister Kivuatr - "Mistress of Ailments". Despite their terrible “titles” mentioned above, they are both capable of not only harming, but also, on the contrary, returning health and life to even a lifeless corpse, which is what happens to Lämmenkainen.
