Woah! Very fine map. Your style is deft and lovely detailed with some subtlety.
Please pardon me asking, but would you by any chance be interested in helping out the volunteer project known as the Ninth Age (T9A for short: www.the-ninth-age.com/ )? It is the spiritual successor of Warhammer Fantasy, run by 300+ volunteer contributors all tinkering in their spare time, and it aims to go even further than Warhammer did along the paths of historically based dark fantasy smörgåsbord setting: i.imgur.com/dlmQkB6.jpg
For one thing, T9A is the perfect way for what used to be Warhammer fantasy fanart to instead become official artwork for an emerging setting, and thus gain much more widespread exposure.
Moreover, T9A is always welcoming artists who want to join their art team, and your skill and distinctive designs would be great to have on board, should you ever be interested in joining and help develop this setting by putting your own distinctive mark upon its art pool. If you would by any chance be interested in donating old artworks of yours, then here is a quick guide for T9A gallery upload of art contributions: i.imgur.com/ORLCncV.jpg
I can get you in E-mail contact with the head of their art team, if ever you're interested.
Oh and by the way, you might want to check out the Oldhammer Art Contest: forum.oldhammer.org.uk/viewtop…
Feel like doodling something '80s style, by any chance?
At any rate, splendid artworks! Evocative to boot, and coloured like a dream. Have a nice day.

No problem, you can use it for your personal game, just don't publish it.

I've tried before myself. Looks like you did better than me. Did you find any interesting / useful tutorials to help with this?

I recommend going through cartographersguild.com, a great site for learning and inspiration.

May I ask how you made this one?

Just in Photoshop, with plenty of painting, some texture overlays and layer styles. I needed a portfolio piece map in a hurry, so I used a lot of coastlines from online world maps to get an overall realistic feel.

I see Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, USA, UK, Canada, Russia, Turkey, Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands - a little piece of each! Awesome

Jason, this map looks exceedingly similar to the map of Tyria from Guild Wars(2). Have you played either of those games? I suppose even if you "copied" their ideas, it doesn't really matter, but still.

Hi , no, I've never played Guild Wars, that's a shame that they're similar. My thinking was that I wanted a world which could fit into a squarish format, and that would have a decent amount of landmass and not too much dead space (ie, water), as it's not a realistic world, but a world designed as a wargaming map essentially. I suspect that game design considerations probably result in many maps being similar in that way.
I also used a lot of parts of real Earth coastlines as a basis for the continents. Maybe other map makers do the same thing, which would also result in similarities.

Looks great, but there is on small catch. No matter how much you twist and turn them, some shapes will still stand out. Take a look at this: i.imgur.com/W6biTIu.jpg f… more details. Perhaps make the borrowings a little less obvious another time.

Yes, I definitely wanted realistic coastlines, so I used real world shapes. I didn't have a lot of time to think out realistic landmasses as I needed the piece in my portfolio. It's something to consider when I do a second version one day.

Is there anything wrong with that? Where else are we to draw inspiration, besides from what we know? I admire this creativity. But seriously, is anyone copyrighting the world map?
