jekkal — How to Classify Anthro

Description Because I'm sick of arguing about this in the forums.

Let's get some things straight here: All Furry is Anthro, but not all Anthro is Furry. The Chart breaks everything down thusly:

Anthro covers every possible thing you could turn into a humanoid, from superintelligent shades of blue to your pencil, and even covers various things like your tattoos coming to life. Machines, Animals, and Plants, in non-anthro form, are all what they sound like. Anthro machines are Droids, anthro plants are Treants, and Anthro Animals are Furries. Combining Droids and Furries gives us Cyborgs, while the same combination outside of the Anthro spectrum gives us virtual pets like Aibo. Plants don't really merge with Machines or Animals too well.

So, there you have it, in nifty Venn Diagram form: All Furry is Anthro, but not all Anthro is Furry. If you insist on telling me your cartoon kitties are Anthro but not Furry, I'll be directing you to this.

If you're drawing animals with human traits, it's Furry regardless of how cartoony or sexualized it is. GET OVER IT.

So what we have learned here is we don't have to use ANY of these terms, and just call them anthros and it would still be correct.
Like seriously guys, we can just google this.

anthropomorphism - the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object.

So Furry, Cyborg, Aliens, ANYTHING with human traits is an ANTHRO.

A sea sponge is an animal

Spongebob is a sea spongebob

Spongebob is an anthro

All animals that are anthros are furries

Therefore

Spongebob is a furry.

Well that is according to this venn diagram.

"The diagram only classifies those that are "humanoid", so anything that are none "humanoid" such as wisps don't fall under the categories of classification.

Only problem I have with this is that not all animals with human traits could be considered furry because what if you gave a bird, fish, insect or lizard human traits. They don't exactly have fur. what would you classify those? Would it be simply classified as anthro- whatever animal it was?

It's been years since you made this comment so I dunno if you already found your answer but here:
Generally they're still called "furries" by the general populace but getting specific?

Scalie (lizards and stuff)
Feathery (birds and stuff)
Furry- a coverall but mostly mammals.

find me a single RELIABLE source that proves all animal anthros are Furry.

What you're saying is that e.g. ancient Egyptians and their gods belong to a fandom that was made up only within the last half-a-century !
Their gods WERE anthropomorphic animals, just look at e.g. Anubis: in general a human body anatomy and canid(animal) head...
Srry but that sounds riddiculus... and can't just forget and ignore the historical and cultural context... animal anthros are even older than ancient Egyptian gods, and you're basically trying to make them Furry...

Furry is an identity. Like being a fan of a music band is.
Liking/drawing etc. anthropomorphic animals and purchasing some anthro animal products isn't enough to be a Furry, just like liking some songs and having a CB of a band isn't. Furries have fursuits, fursonas, furcons, even furry porn, and music band fans have T-shitrs, CDs, concerts&fan cons, even porn (just look at fanfics of the 'fan meets the musican and they have an affair' type), both can have great impact on the individual's life. And both don't require the member to do and have all the things but also having some of the things doesn't automatically make you one(furry or fan of the band).
All is actually a matter of defining oneself. A subculture, e.g. according to Wikipedia.

besides there are fursonas which are NOT animal anthros but i.e. plant, alien or machine anthros (there are e.g. plane fursonas! I've seen some on FA) or not even anthro... if an otherkin is also a Furry then srry but if they have fursonas they may be totally non-anthro (since they believe to be the actual animal, not just a humanized version of it, even if it's just the non-animal mind). But they have right to self identify as Furries...

also, you might find this interesting:

I  believe that BOTH definitions of furry: the 'anthro porn' and the 'animal anthro' are inaccurate.

This may help me out because I'm thinking about having anthropomorphic things into an animated short. Which can be seen in this link.

But I said "furry" at school one time. Talk about being the laughingstock...
So, no offense, even though this guide is really good, I won't be saying furry.

I have a question. (Not an argument, just hoping you could further educate my confusion.) In this diagram, it says anthro + machine + animal = cyborg. But doesn't cyborg mean a human-like being with non-human abilities?

Again, sorry if this comes off as rude. I'm not disagreeing with you in any way, I'm just confused. ^-^;;

Do dryads count as treants? And I seem to remember some anthro flowers from old (really old) Merrie Melodies cartoons. (The flowers from Alice in Wonderland probably fit too.) When I think of Treants, I think of Treebeard from Lord of the Rings.

I never really thought about anthro plants until I saw your diagram. Thanks for giving me something interesting to think about.

Oh, good. You actually got it right. I saw a drawing somewhere that had an "anthro" character and a "furry" character compared to one another with point by point differences like foot type, head shape, and I was like WTF, did you just pull all of this information out of your ass based on your own opinion?

DrewSaga [2012-03-18 03:34:13 +0000 UTC]

So wouldn't this mean Cyborgs and Droids are technically the same thing.

And I thought that it would be animals with fur would be considered furries, in other words, a Anthro Snake for example, how would that count as furry, technically it is an animal, but it don't have good amount of fur at all.

Mancoin In reply to DrewSaga [2012-05-27 14:25:12 +0000 UTC]

Within the furry fandom i've seen like "sub-categories" for furries that don't actually have fur. Like Scalies ( for lizards, snakes and so on ), Avians ( Birds ).

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Foxyghostguy In reply to DrewSaga [2012-04-15 03:57:28 +0000 UTC]

A cyborg has to have a biotic base to be a cyborg. That is the differencee between droid and cyborg. And although a snake doesn't have fur it is still an animal, and when ANY animal is anthropomorphic it is thus furry. :3 Any other questions?
