Description Mark flush set a beautiful natural star ruby for the focal point of this custom cast Argentium silver ring. The ruby has a very nice star with well-defined rays.... it is very difficult to capture the effect in a photograph.

Mark carved the wax model for this ring and cast it himself... see our recent journal entry for details~ [link]

Yay for you Mark! You're really good with this whole wax & casting business. Can't wait for more!

I find that lighting is too often the very trickiest part of photography. A shame that star doesn't show better... oh well. Better luck next time Jess! You're already a much better photographer than I am.

Thanks Elly This setting shows a lot of the stone a bezel would have covered more of it

Star stones are fascinating.

I especially like the dark Idaho star garnets.

*dgreene has the right idea, use a pen light.

It really does work.

In this image you show two star rubies in the upper right corner but only one in the ring itself. Out of curiosity, what become of the second star ruby?

I actually did use a small flashlight... which is how I got the rays on the bottom right photo. Mark is very good at taking star photos... but I struggle with it. Sunlight shows the star better but also produces a distracting glare.
The stars in the upper right corner are an earring pair we showed for an example. Currently that pair is just part of our star collection. Thanks for commenting

It looks nice! Some times when I photograph star rubies or sapphires I use a pen light to get the star where I want it.

Jess used a pen light in the bottom right photo. I have more experience photographing stars but have my time split between the casino and doing jewelry so Jess has been doing me the favor of capturing my work on camera. She had about an hour before I went to work and delivered the ring to our client

The photo on the right catches it just fine. What a rare piece to behold.

Oh wow that's stunning! Then again, Ruby is my birth stone and simple designs like this always make me giddy. ^^

This is an extremely clean setting, you just don't see many flush style set cabs
