Description This is a fabricated heavy gauge sterling ring with a very bright spessartite garnet and hand engraving flame detail. Mark made a similar ring where he added black enamel into the flame engraving. The black was a great contrast against the orange of the spessartite garnet. Mark is considering adding the black enamel into this ring as well. We'd love to hear any thoughts or opinions about whether you think he should add the black enamel or leave the ring as is(:

absolutely beautiful - leave it as is , the play of light on the silver is enough contrast and the lucky person who wears this stunning piece will add over the years their own patina which will add to the contrast .

What's Captain Planet?

Captain Planet was a cartoon about saving mother nature and there were these 5 kids with magical rings, one was fire, one earth, water, wind, and heart. When they combined the powers together Captain Planet would come. It was a cheesy show but this ring reminded me of the fire ring (the coolest ring on the show)

Leave it as is, I think. If you want it to be black, maybe Liver of Sulphur will make it dark enough? I find that enamels don't have the durability for an everyday-wearing ring. It is a classic piece, and the engraving is not the right shape for niello...

It's awesome, and I think either blackening and polishing the ring or enameling it would be a great idea to bring out even more of the carving detail!

in person, the ring probably looks awesome, from a photo, however, the flames are very hard to read. the black would probably help that, but so would a closer-up photo. i wouldn't add color other than black myself, however, because it would be hard to match it to the golds of the garnet well. if you've done one ring with the black enamel, maybe leave this one be.

This gave me an idea....have the flames be of fire/cherry opal??? May be some difficult carving involved, but I'm sure you could do it. Maybe would work better in a pendant setting?? Either way, I like the ring with or without the black enamel!! Wonderful work!!

I agree with Catsarah on seeing the other ring to see what the enameling looks like. I think that a varied series of of these rings would be pretty as well. Did you make this out of wax or sheet?

This was made from 8x3mm stock. You will see it with enameling. I think I will at least do one version of each.

I like it the way it is, but it would be easier to make a choice if I could see the other piece. I just can't picture what that would look like. Also, in a ring, enamelling would eventually get chipped and damaged taking away from the looks of it over time.

Wouldn't the enamelling process of heating the ring quickly be detrimental to the stone? I know garnets are heat tolerant, but are they thermal shock tolerant as well?

It would look nice though. I am always for color But, it sweet as is as well.

Ceramit would be the enamel I would be using which fires at lower temps and won't chip as easy as other enamels.
