Description This is the first finished illustration for my Sherlock Holmes project, starting with "The Boscombe Valley Mystery". There'll be ten black and white illustrations (starting with this one) embedded in the text, five full color plus a full color cover. This is where Mrs. Watson gives her devoted husband permission to follow ol' Holmes on some wild goose chase in the country, because he hadn't been looking that well lately and some country air might do him some good. As always, any questions, comments or concerns are welcome (unless you say "hey, he doesn't look like Judd Law...then you get a smack!)

the details are amazing (honestly how do you do that?)

also YES! for Dr.Watson/Mrs. watson!!! they're the only cannon couple and No one draws them, because they rather draw that "couple which is not cannon and shall not be name"

and don't get me started on her treatment in the not-be-named movie...

Ah, the details...did I mention that I had to wag my head several times to avoid going cross-eyed? That helped with the detail, shall we say. It was quite enjoyable drawing the Canon Couple, reading the story it was very amusing seeing Watson, the soldier that he is, being allowed to accompany his best friend on another wild goose chase.

Terrific, hat is rather how I imagine Morstan to look like! I commend your ability with crosshatching also. I must say I imagine Watson as more blond, however (no, not because of Jude Law, but David Burke). That's just a personal preference, though. I wish you good luck with your project!

Thank you, let's just say going cross-eyed on occasion was, well, more than occasional. I had pictured Watson as having lighter colored hair as well, but in a small pen sketch I did (with slicked dark hair) the feeling of "Watson" was so undeniable I decided well, why not? It would be mildly different from many prior images. The real test will be the acceptance of future Holmes images...rather terrifying really. Like making an image of Harry Potter!

Wow... very bright, with excellent detail. Mrs. Watson is especially lively.

Haha, ever seen Sidney Paget's illustrations? He was the illustrator for the original stories. He was good, but kind of bland. This isn't as realistic, but it's possibly more eye-catching.

Only critique I'd offer, though, is with Watson (and no, not that he doesn't look like Jude Law, don't worry.) It's with his facial hair. The large sideburn is a nice Victorian touch, sure, but it just doesn't suit your Watson. It eats up his face too much, and makes him look too old. He looks a bit like a shopkeeper.

So if I were to offer a suggestion, shrink the sideburn, to make him look younger, more man-of-action, and trim his mustache down; make it thinner, more straight across. It'll keep him distinguished, but in a more "Errol Flynn" kind of panache.

That's just one guy's comment, though. It's your call, in the end. You've set a big task for yourself. Good luck!

MUUUUUUCH appreciated! I see your point with trimming up his mustache and sideburns and will certainly take a second look at it.

Actually, I did take a look at Paget's illustrations (at all times) while working on the pen work on this. It's nice, but I agree, kind of bland. Charles Dana Gibson, however, I love, a lot more vitality in his images. With this I was trying to emulate the engraver Jan Saendredam who's work was literally a revelation. Thanks for the kind words! More to come!
