Description
The history of the Krell is linked to that of two other races that vied for dominance of Ahn. In many ways this distant world differs greatly from our own, which was hospitable enough to let us master most environments with relatively simple tools. Ahn’s people were long confined to the far northern hemisphere and developed agriculture, numeracy, literacy, astronomy and metallurgy before moving further south. To outsiders they would have initially seemed a remarkably united race but closer inspection would reveal a highly stratified society. The ruling Zaudrathi caste kept higher learning to themselves while the Ureshi were tasked with unskilled labour. Rebellions were inevitable, but they were neither infrequent enough to catch Zaudrathi unprepared or organised enough to topple leaders appointed by merit, not birth, and a well-trained military. Internal coups were more successful but one tenet never changed: Zaudrathi ruled, Ureshi served. This system was so strictly enforced, and intermarriage was so rare, these castes became separate races and in time virtual subspecies.
As technologies improved they allowed both groups to spread to new environments, but they demanded higher levels of Ureshi education. Zaudrathi leaders stressed rote learning, so advanced manufacturing seemed more doctrinal than scientific, but the Ureshi were not immune to the lure of critical thought. Their later rebellions were more destructive and less easily quelled. Zaudrathi maintained their lead in science, but eventually they had to grant Ureshi independence.
Had the Ureshi been more vengeful, they might have enslaved or exterminated their old masters; but they had tired of bloodshed and only wished to rule themselves. The great social experiments conducted in the absence of Zaudrathi leadership often ended in disaster but gradually led to more positive change. Zaudrathi progress meanwhile slowed, for the former ruling caste had lost the support of a large and inexpensive workforce. Yet it retained its discipline while the Ureshi grew more profligate. When Ureshi factions went to war over dwindling resources the Zaudrathi tried to intervene, but this stirred Ureshi memories of Zaudrathi tyranny and a greater war began.
The Ureshi made some major gains when they seized Zaudrathi cities and acquired new technologies, but the great Zaudrathi skyholds remained beyond Ureshi reach. They rained death on Ureshi armies but could never control enough land to win decisive victories. Centuries of carnage ended in a stalemate, but also saw the Krell emerge as an important political force. As Zaudrathi-Ureshi hybrids, the Krell had long been shunned by both but now served as intermediaries between two irreconcilable foes.
An uneasy peace began. The Zaudrathi skyholds were not completely self-sufficient and the Ureshi still desired Zaudrathi technology. Through trade with both the Krell ensured neither ever had to meet. Relations broke down when it was discovered the Zaudrathi sky factories were stealthily but steadily pumping dense toxins into the air. At first these condensed on the seas, killing higher organisms and producing blood-red algal blooms. As the miasma thickened and spread over lower coastal lands Ureshi farms began to fail and the people they supported starved. The Zaudrathi maintained innocence but the Ureshi launched massed attacks with airborne forces of their own. Some factories and skyholds fell but the majority survived. The miasma they released kept spreading and millions more Ureshi died.
The Ureshi’s sole advantage lay in better bioengineering. The scale of destruction the Zaudrathi had wrought on their world drove them to more desperate schemes. Ureshi scientists developed race-specific viruses which would subject Zaudrathi to horrific deaths. The main challenge was dispersal. Ureshi air assets were greatly reduced, the skyholds were easily quarantined, and success was only likely if they could all be hit at once. Ureshi leaders appealed to the Krell, but the Krell maintained neutrality from their well-defended mountain keeps. The desperate Ureshi attacked and seized the largest one, commandeered its etherwings, and used them to strengthen their own forces before launching one last attack on their mortal enemies.
The Krell paid it little notice; they were too busy repelling Ureshi from their other keeps. In time the attacks slowed, then stopped. No more Ureshi climbed the slopes and no more Zaudrathi came from skyholds drifting far above. The Krell launched expeditions and found the skyholds filled with corpses the colder upper atmosphere had dried and eerily preserved. The Krell shut down the factories that had been left to pump out death in a final act of hate. Further investigations revealed new technologies the Zaudrathi had apparently hoped would reverse the process and one day let them claim the world.
The Krell remain few, but their numbers are growing, and as the poison dissipates their small territories expand. Their etherwings travel between keeps and help life spread across the world. For all the horrors it has seen, Ahn knows nothing more of war; and all Krell are sworn to remember they became masters of their world not through valour or vindictiveness, but through simple perseverance.

How is this cyborg thing supossed to be able to fly, anyway?

I've often wondered the same thing while looking at dragons in fantasy and flying machines in soft sci fi. If magic isn't good enough we can always fall back on weird science or different natural laws.

PS: this beautiful combination between a machine and a living creature, is great.
in fact, both the colour schemes and the dragon-like shape of this airplane vaguely reminded me of this great dragon's drawing of yours:
it is a very distant and vague connection, but both pics have awesome, and incredibly cool dragon-like vibes, and i love that both creatures/objects are aesthetically pleasing fushions of organic matter and of machine, both in the form of a fearsome dragon-like creation.
also the dark-grey, purple and white colours form a very elegant and smooth combination, and it makes your already beautiful object even cooler.
i hope i dont sound wrong/offensive, i just loved the vague connection between the two different pictures, both in terms of shape/organic+mechanic fusion, and in terms of a dragonic shape.
you draw amazing artwork as always!

this is a beautiful combination between a machine and a living creature, while the dark-grey, purple and white colours form a very elegant and smooth combination, and it makes your already beautiful object even cooler.
now, lets analyse the airship's design+the story:
the airship is nicely drawn, with a cool design, smooth linework, a great organic part (the dark-grey body, the flaps/wings of the airship), along with the fins of the tail and the side-flaps of this creature's body.
then, we have the strange ''eye-like'' purple orbs that dont only exist on its head (as eyes), but also on its neck, body and on its rear-side, along with something that functions as a high-tech exhaust system.
furthermore, i like that the head is covered by a white robotic mask that is filled with slits and sensors, and that the creature's ''saddle'' on its back is made from the same material.
and on top of this intricate+high tech saddle, we have the rider.
the rider sports a white-techno mask with purple eye-orbs, designed in a similar manner to the creature's (robotic?) head-mask.
in the rider's case, his mask is probably used in order to protect himself from toxic gases that exist in the air (as a result of the horrible chemical war between the zaudrathi and the ureshi clans), which could also be the case as to why his airship/creature also has such a similar techno-mask on its head... (since its a partially organic hybrid... unless its mask is its actual robotic head, ofcourse.).
and along with the rider's cool head-mask, he wears a nice outfit which is made out of leather and armour, which would fully protect him from the elements outside, and in the worst case scenario, from toxic gasses/from enemy fire.
so, all in all, the drawing is perfect. flawless. impressive, with a beautiful airship and an elegant humanoid/alien rider.
great depiction of the ship's movement through the sky, it looks so realistic and beautiful, that is amazing.
as for the story:
it was a GREAT story.
i liked how it started out as the story between two rival factions of the planet (Ahn), the zaudrathi and the ureshi: i also liked that, as time moved on, the two factions grew even more apart, and they functioned on a strict master/servant class system, while the zaudrathi's high intellect, their lack of inbreeding and their careful plans, all led to a long-lasting reign over their servants.
but when the ureshi gradually got more and more technology and knowledge, their revolts worked, and they became an independent kingdom/country.
it was sad to see that when the ureshi had a civil war, the zaudrathi tried to help the rivaling ureshi factions, but the ureshi saw this as a (potentially) malicious attempt to enslave them again, and the war took a turn for the worse.
i also liked the message that all wars are bad (obviously), and that extreme measures will eventually kill us all (such as the case when the zaudrathi started polluting the planet in a mass-chemical war, in an attempt to kill off all of the ureshi...)
but thankfully, when the two rivalling factions died off, the persistant and pacifist race of the krells survived: and they thankfully found the zaudrathi's machine(s) that could (slowly) reverse the damage that the planet had, thus saving the whole ecosystem/the planet.
some of the lines in your story, stuck with me:
''The Krell shut down the (zaudrathi) factories that had been left to pump out death in a final act of hate.'' such a strong message about the dangers of malice and hatred against someone else: some bad people would even go so far as to destroy the whole planet, only to ensure their enemies demise. its so sad.
and also:
''all Krell are sworn to remember they became masters of their world not through valour or vindictiveness, but through simple perseverance.''
such a beautiful and wise sentence.
the krell might've been hybrids of the zaudrathi+the ureshi tribes/races, but they have definitely been the wiser, the more calm-headed, and the always peaceful/neutral against their common enemies: eventually, both luck, chance, and their careful planning, made them the final and the best rulers of the planet, while they vowed to never forget the harsh lesson that made them the masters of this planet: that they didnt win out of strength or malice, but out of perseverance.
your drawings story in the description was nothing short of a masterpiece, a short epoch of a once great civilization, a history both distant, and eerily close to us.
i admire both your drawing skills, AND your great writting/story-telling skills.
you are the best, keep it up!

I like a lot about this story, at least as far as the world, its cultures, and their histories go. I sometimes think I'm at my best when I'm working on this scale in a pseudo-documentary style. I wrote this in one go and it hardly needed editing. The characterisation, dialogue and minor human interactions most readers want from literature don't often come so naturally.
I could definitely do more with this world and I'm tempted to continue the story through a series of pictures and descriptions that cover Krell exploration and gradual reconstruction of a planet that was nearly destroyed. It's a more positive scenario than most of the ones I've shared online and would call for more imaginative biological, technological and cultural musings as well. I'd be very keen to hear your thoughts.

I really enjoy the pseudo-docu style, I've read a very few books in that style and find the sweeping vastness of history just as interesting as human interaction, myself.
