I love the color palette in this. Don't know if you'll recall, but when you were painting the waves, did you work with high or low opacity?

Thanks! Looking at it and making an informed act of guestimemory I do believe that is high opacity, then some gel layer washes over the top in Painter!

Hm, I never use the gel setting... Might have to give it a try some time.

Its very like multiply, with some subtle differences. And it comes earlier in the drop down than multiply, so its quicker to select!

Very cool. Makes me want to go sailing, feel the briny air on my face! I dig the eyes on the front of the ship, and its swordfish like nose.

1000 Greek vessels set forth to burn Troy... possibly the most epic yet most tragic tale of the ancient times! Great illustration! Love your attention to historical detail, especially the eyes the Greek painted on their trireme to ward off Poseidon's monsters. heeehehe!

Thanks you! I'm a long time fan of both Painter and Photoshop, and Painter's strength is definitely real world media emulation. Though I have some friends who use Photoshop to great effect - have a google for Matt Dixon and Kieran Yanner.

I absolutely love how you've handled the water here. Delicate blends of green, blue and darker blues. I also notice the wave rise at the far right of the pic, making some ships higher than the others- great idea, it does remind you one the movement of the ocean. Ships don't all sail on a perfectly nice flat and smooth surface.

It was a tough breif to handle, since the image was going to be reproduced so small. Normally that's not a huge issue when workign on ccgs. But 1000 ships!?! I tried to do quite a bit of thinking before I started, and grab any ideas that could help - like the waves in the sea.

I'm glad you like it!

Thanks Joe,

Yeah I didn't show these around much as the invoice is still outstanding months and month late, and I associate them with being owed a lot of money. Hey ho, a situation I'm sure you can relate to being freelance yourself.
