Gimp is probably the closest thing to ps that is free.

Woah, you're getting really great with landscapes... this is amazing!
Perfect tectures, great scenery and composition - altogehter, a perfect setting for the beginning of a dark fairy tale.
I'm especially intrigued by the reflection in the lake, you did a truly great job on that. One of my favourites from you!

Wow, thank you.

Landscapes seem to be my strong point.

Think it is because I can imagine it being a place where I would like to be.

An escape from reality I guess.

Nice painted, I love the details and the colours And that you made this all in GIMP, I could never properly operate this program...  Great work
I''m not sure however if grass shouldn't reflect on the water..

Thank you for your kind comment and pointing out the missing grass reflection.

Gimp is hard to learn but worth the effort, there are a lot of youtube tutorial vids to help.

Hmm, indeed there are. I must try one day. But you know, when you know one program, it's hard to switch to another one. But on the other hand, everyone needs sometimes some kind of challenge... We'll see. Anyway, one more time - congratulations

Looks great. There's a tremendous amount of detailed work in that grass and the reflection of the mountain in the water is impressive. Excellent work.

Have a very good day.

The reflection of the mountain looks really nice. I like how everything is singular in this picture. One bird, One tree, etc. It gives the picture a sense of lonliness.

Water is fun but grass is the worst thing to draw.

Thank you so much.

Lairai In reply to JPMNeg [2015-08-22 23:39:46 +0000 UTC]

Water is a whole lot of experiments but it mostly turns out well, as long as oversaturated turquoise stays out of the way, while grass is so complicated, mainly because you can't just slap it on to every surface everywhere and don't even get me started on the shadows... you're welcome.

JPMNeg In reply to Lairai [2015-08-23 12:20:35 +0000 UTC]

This was done almost entirely with 2 brushes, 1 hard round and 1 soft oval.

I did cheat on the grass, duplicate and flip to cut down on the blades work.

Needs something to break up the grass though.

Been working long hours and haven't been motivated lately, just wanted to do something.

Lairai In reply to JPMNeg [2015-08-23 12:34:02 +0000 UTC]

Although I used GIMP for about a year (then I got Photoshop), I am not entirely sure how the brushes there work, but I have seen a few GIMP brushes around Deviantart.Maybe adding them would make things easier. The basic round brushes can be used to create almost everything, but textures and other really detailed things are much easier to create with custom brushes.

Grass is difficult to draw.It took me a really long time to make it look somewhat acceptable and there is still so much to do.Maybe adding more colors to it would break that unified feel of it.

Same here, I have so many sketches and ideas but not the motivation to make them into drawings. What I do to sort of motivate myself is that I look at some really good and professional artists and I tell myself that if I keep practising and keep drawing, my works will one day look like theirs. And it's true! You improve with every drawing

JPMNeg In reply to Lairai [2015-08-23 13:05:20 +0000 UTC]

My lack of motivation comes more from the fatigue of working long hours.

Adding more colors is a good idea for the grass, probably just going to go on to something new though.

I have a ton of brushes and lots for texture, but want to get away from relying to heavily on them.

Gimp lets you use Adobe brushes also. Wanted to get back to basics on this.

I think it is important to be able to paint without over using textures.

Lairai In reply to JPMNeg [2015-08-23 13:31:45 +0000 UTC]

When it comes to digital art, it is all a very individual thing.Everybody has a unique way of drawing or painting. Some people paint everything by hand and some people use a lot of textures, but I believe that everything sort of works as long as you know at least a bit of what you're doing.I, for one, use textures, mainly on rocks and sometimes trees, but I do not just grab a random image and slap it onto a blank surface.Using too many textures never works since it hurts to look at the finished work because there are so many details everywhere. So as I said, it is up to each artist to use textures or draw things by hand. That is my opinion at least

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JPMNeg In reply to Lairai [2015-08-23 14:05:38 +0000 UTC]

Don’t get me wrong on using texture brushes, I will still be using them a lot.

They are an important tool, just didn't rely on them to much here.

An absolute must on rocks, skin and a million other things.

They make a huge difference in the level of work.

Lairai In reply to JPMNeg [2015-08-23 14:16:26 +0000 UTC]

Though in PS, you can make a pretty realistic rock texture using the filters, texture brushes are still important, if you aim to give your works a realistic feel. Some artists' styles have absolutely no need of textures and still look great
