Description You are more than welcome to use my stamps. Just let me know when and where so I feel loved.

mammal |ˈmaməl|
noun
a warm-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that is distinguished by the possession of hair or fur...

Definition courtesy of Apple Dictionary
Copyright © 2005–2009 Apple Inc.

The last time I shaved my legs was in October of 2009, with this [link] and this [link] helping me stick to my guns. The company was brilliant in their scheme, manipulating women to think that their bodies were imperfect, and nearly 100 years later, women are still dishing out hundreds of dollars in hair-removal products.

This [link] also embellishes a topic of interest.

Guilty confession: I do still shave my armpits, because after the hair gets longer (longer than stubble) it irritates the surrounding skin and I can actually smell myself. I don't like being able to smell myself. I know several men who feel the same way about it for themselves.

My mother always told me to never shave because of what it does and how it grows back in such a disappointing way. This is from her experience. She said that she adores my "thick" eyebrows and leg hair. Granted she also told me that it wasn't too little nor too much.

I never shaved UNTIL today and that's just my armpit hair. I didn't shave because I looked 'ugly' nor did I feed on the media's representation of a beautiful woman. Sorry but I am no waxed up barbie doll. I did it because it made me uncomfortable, it was hard to maintain hygiene wise ESPECIALLY in hot weather, and it was very irritable. I wanted it to go.

I get why people shave nowadays. Though not because of media. Girls shouldn't ever look at the media and try to shape themselves into an idealized picture of what is beautiful. Its great to have self awareness about your body/work out. I am not saying not to take pride or inspiration; but find balance.

When I say inspiration I mean trying to eat healthy, keep your body in a healthy state, maintain hygiene, and attempt to HEALTHILY transition to a comfortable goal. Not stop eating, making yourself throw up, wax everything to look good in media's eyes, ect.

I have never shaved and don't plan too. My boyfriend said he would be a hypocrite if he held leg hair against me. I do find it ridiculous that women are expected to shave these days, its whats on the inside that counts, not the outside.

Well what if some women feel uncomfortable with being hairy? I tweeze my eyebrows when they start to get bushy, I shave my armpits and legs, and I would be devastated if I started growing a mustache. I feel like a homeless person when I don't and I think that if women want to shave, they should do it and they don't need to be called out by so-called "feminists" and be accused of "submitting the the patriarchy".

The problem is that we've been told from day one that it's wrong to have hair, so most women don't have anything to compare it to. I'm sorry my decision makes you think "homeless".

I'm not insulting you for your own personal decision, but that doesn't mean that other people aren't allowed to personally disagree with it and maybe not do it themselves. It's just a matter of preference.

I'm happy that you realize that.  We need more people to understand it.

The funny thing is mammals are named after the mammary glands or the breasts ducts. In other words, we are named after boobs (literally) and women are pretty much the reason why we have the name mammal fur aside.

Anyway, I believe women should choose to shave or not without being condemned for their choice.

Funny how it works, then, that women are to thank for the word "mammal", yet it's scandalous for a woman's breasts to be bare. I'm not about to take on a campaign in that realm, but it's another of many things that has daunted me.

Thank you for the support.

Your welcome! Yeah i have always wondered about these double standards. Other countries i see have it worse (women can even show there faces in public and cannot be outside unless with a man) but us being free, should equal rights and be able to chose not to shave or shave their legs and expose their chests without any backlash.

I shave my legs mostly because i will look like a chimpanzee with mange if I don't. If i had lighter body hair I wouldn't lol.

Mine's dark. I don't care if anyone thinks I look like a chimpanzee with mange because it's a conditioned response. Don't get me wrong, that isn't to insult you or to suggest you're calling me a mangy chimpanzee (though that would be original! ). We're all very conditioned by the media.

I only shave my armpits, and only because I don't like the way it feels-stubble scratches and longer hairs irritate the area.
Other than that, I shave nothing. HAIRY LEGS FOREVER!!!

Agreed!

I got three funny looks today for my legs, two of them being from women. They don't know what they're missing.

I'm lucky because I'm blonde, so my hairs are hard to see. But you're so right. They just don't realize what a relief it is to not have to worry about it.

But I shave my face every night

Bodybuilders and swimmers strip their body of hair all the time. I'm neither (though I do enjoy the occasional swim) so I feel no great need to shave my legs. I still shave my underarms, though, but I know a lot of men who do as well, including my husband. If we don't, we can easily smell ourselves at the end of the day. I don't like being able to smell myself.

I can sympathize with your position, though. It seems that, for similar reasons, my family wanted my ears pierced. As though, if I did not get them pierced, I'd turn into a boy. Well, I haven't punctured my ears since I was ten, and I still have both my X chromosomes.

I only shave my underarms and legs if I'm wearing a swimsuit or something. The extra hair in the winter helps keep me nice and warm :3

justjukka In reply to dracotheferret [2011-02-02 02:13:46 +0000 UTC]

Why do you shave your legs, otherwise?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dracotheferret In reply to justjukka [2011-02-02 02:29:56 +0000 UTC]

I guess it's just habit from high school and being insulted for not doing it. The hair is actually light enough so I don't have to do it often, (only about once every 2 months). As for the underarms, I do start to reek like a frat boy if I don't keep them trimmed, considering the ridiculous amount of excercise I get every day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

justjukka In reply to dracotheferret [2011-02-02 05:30:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh, same here! The hair on the underarms has to go (for me). I understand all the biological reasons for it being there, but I really don't like it when I can smell myself. I know several men who feel the same about it.

Above all else, just be comfortable with yourself. It may not be for everyone, but I've become more comfortable with myself since I stopped shaving. I know the hair is there, so I'm not worried about missing a spot.

I just let it all grow. I do quite a bit of sport too, but I wash at least twice a day (sometimes more) and I don't smell. I have quite a lot as well, evidence in my gallery.

But like you say, whatever works for you, and just don't be intimidated - it's your body.

I don't shave because people expect me to, I shave because I choose to. I don't feel any pressure either way, it's just a personal preference.

justjukka In reply to ephoria516 [2010-08-19 02:13:24 +0000 UTC]

That's fine. The problem is, most people don't know where that personal preference began, so they expect it of everyone else.

ephoria516 In reply to justjukka [2010-08-19 02:33:15 +0000 UTC]

I suppose. I don't really care if other women choose to or not, that's their decision to make. Some of us like to just because, some do it because they feel like they have to, others don't at all because they don't want to. Whatever you choose is fine.

I think the definition is a vertibrae, which the females of the species produce milk for their young...

But also true. Gotta dig the European nations where hair is fair. I mean...women couldn't even shave until like, the twenties, maybe? Who freaking cares, is what I'd like to know, if I have to stare at guys' nasty mammoth legs all day long then I do not expect complaints if I do the same.

justjukka In reply to linawifeofL [2010-05-03 21:37:58 +0000 UTC]

I admit, I just used the hairy part of the definition. The ellipses signify my pointed laziness.

Yeah, that's my favorite situation...some smelly behemoth of a male-type expects you to shave your legs. Ridiculous.

Truth be told, I've worn shorts several times in public places and nobody's said a thing. My hair isn't very light, and I haven't even received funny looks.

Bastet3940 [2010-04-14 00:44:26 +0000 UTC]

ya, it sucks how in society woman are naturally expected to be like, absolutely hairless, whereas a guy wouldn't have to shave or even fix himself up much in the morning to be accepted in society. I mean I'm not saying it's law that women have to be their prettiest everyday, but it's better accepted; and if you don't look perfect, it seems, you are for some reason considered 'ugly' overall...especially you'll notice this a lot in schools. Girls can be cruel if you are not perfect sometimes

justjukka In reply to Bastet3940 [2010-04-14 00:55:57 +0000 UTC]

I hear you, there. I have a few close girl friends, but growing up, most of our friends were boys. Society may think it ironic, but they accepted us for who we were (without trying to get into our pants, so said society can stick it), while Cosmopolitan Magazine's perfect girls sniped about what we were doing wrong. I won't even pretend to understand their type.
