Description A Fiat CR.42 Falco in the colours of Escadrille 4/II/2 of the Belgian Army Air Corps (AΓ©ronautique Militaire Belge), during the desperate May days of 1940.

A late purchase by the Belgian Army to replace its obsolete Fairey Firefly fighters, the Fiat CR.42 was delivered starting in the spring of 1940 (March 1940). Their introduction into service started under a bad omen - the first aircraft to be delivered crashed during its landing.

While a total of 40 aircraft had been ordered, less than 30 had been delivered when Nazi Germany invaded Belgium on May 10th 1940. While most of the Belgian Army's Air Corps was destroyed on the ground by German Bombers - including half of the CR.42s - the surviving aircraft continued fighting throughout the entire 18-day campaign, scoring confirmed kills against German Ju 52 transport planes, Dornier Do 17 bombers, and even the superior Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter. Most Belgian CR.42s were destroyed on the ground: just two were actually shot down by the German Luftwaffe, while the Fiats in turn scored eight kills. By the end of the campaign (May 28th 1940), 5 out of a fleet of 27 Fiats survived: while it is known these aircraft were later captured in France by German forces, their ultimate fate is unknown.

Kit is a 1/72 scale Italeri kit (#1260), first issued in 2006. Decals are from an after-market decal kit, produced by the now-defunct Dutch manufacturer "Kits At War". Model depicts a Fiat CR.42 of Escadrille 4/II/2 of the AΓ©ronautique Militaire Belge in May of 1940.

Model inventory: kit #518, purchased May 5th 2006 @ Baillien Modelbouw, Antwerp, Belgium.

I've tried it as well (in IL-2: 1946), but it kinda failed to convince me. In reality, the Breda-SAFAT 12.7-mm machine guns had a painfully low firing rate, which made them next to worthless in dogfights.

True, maybe a low firing rate...but the rounds pack a punch with incendiary materials packed inside....i also love the heinkel he-51a biplane fighter

Thank you! ^_^

I actually have three more CR.42 kits in the pipeline, each to be repainted in different colours. One will be a Swedish CR.42, one an Italian CR.42AS fighter-bomber, and one a German Luftwaffe CR.42LW night harrasment ground-attack plane.

Thanks!

I'm actually quite bemused by the fact our Air Force never repainted them (never had the time to do so?), so that they actually flew in "desert colours" in our dull and rainy country... XD

I've done a couple WW-I "kites" in this scale so I know this was a demanding build.
Well done.

Actually, the kit is wonderfully engineered, so it comes together quite beautifully - far more easily than most other biplanes I've built before.

I'd have to dig into my closet to find the Sopwith Camel and Fokker DR-VII, built so long ago---my big fat teddy bear paws are my worst enemy, but I like small scale.
You do beautiful work.

I know how you feel - I'm still trying to locate much of my stuff, recently moved houses, and it's a nightmare taking up stock of everything. I've even noticed one of my (1/72 scale!) Canberra's is missing...! (Martin B-57B Canberra - not exactly one of the smallest models around... >.< )

We have in the UK, a project to get a CR-42 Airworthy. The machine in question belongs to the Fighter Collection at Duxford. Considering the collection also have an airworthy Gloster Gladiator in the fleet, there could be an interesting formation in store when she does fly. There an image of her current state here. [link]

I had heard about it, but I hadn't seen any recent pictures of it. It looks great, would love to see it alongside the Gladiator!

Actually, I'm a bit ashamed to admit I don't have an airbrush. It's something I just keep seem to postpone...
