Description
The Imperial TIE Interceptor was designed to rival the Rebel RZ-1 A-Wing starfighter in terms of speed and firepower. It's interrupted forward wings gave it a relatively small sensor profile and a distinctive dagger-like silhouette. Imperial designers opted for blaster cannons mounted on the wingtips, rather than the traditional chin mounted blaster cannons that the standard TIE fighters carried. The elite special forces variant was an improved version of the standard TIE Interceptor. The Special Forces TIE Interceptor is equipped with powerful afterburning ion engines to increase speed. Additionally, the Special Forces TIE Interceptor the chin blaster cannons, and has hard points for additional weapons pods, such as concussion missile launchers, rocket pods, sensor packages, and other such mission-specific equipment. Though slightly faster that the standard TIE Interceptor, and carrying more firepower, the Special Forces TIE Interceptor does not carry deflector shields or a hyperdrive. The biggest advantage the Special Forces TIE Interceptor has over the standard fighters is the pilot. Special Forces TIE Fighter Pilots are hand picked for special forces training. Arguably the best training available, the Special Forces TIE Pilots are the best of the best, and their kill records prove it. Like all Special Forces TIE Fighters, the Special Forces TIE Interceptor is identified by a red flash on the left side of the cockpit pod. Though the Special Forces TIE Interceptor is a formidable fighter, there are rumors in the Imperial brass that a new, two-man Special Forces TIE fighter is in the works, but based off the standard TIE fighter.
