Sirius Black stood with his hands braced on the fridge in his kitchen, he hung his head as low as it would go, gripped the small object in his right hand tightly and sighed.

...This is how James found him a few minutes later...

He tried for a few conversation starters, but something like “I’d give you a hug buddy, but that would be a little gay,” seemed rather jerk-ish at the moment. He settled for giving Sirius a squeeze on the shoulder.
Sirius stiffened and then brushed James away, “Thanks Prongs,” he managed, “but I’d like to be left alone right now.”
“No problem, I’ll tell everyone you said thankyou for attending.”
Sirius nodded, not trusting his voice.

Sirius Black had not been able to make even the very small speech he had wanted to at the funeral, he counted it as a personal failure on his part... he’d had to get Remus to read it for him...

“There at last when the marllon-leaves were falling, but spring had not yet come, she laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth; and there is her green grave, until the world is changed, and all the days of her life are utterly forgotten.”

...he didn’t care if no one else understood...
Sirius punched the fridge and then swore when his hand came away bloodied, and his fridge came away dented.

“Hows he doing Jamie?” Lily asked, she switched Harry from one hip to the other.
James took Harry, “How do you think he’s doing?”
“That bad huh?”
Harry made a grab for the locket around Lily’s neck. Lily had taken to wearing it recently, it had two photos in it, her two best friends; now deceased.

James was distracted then by an awkward conversation struck up by Alastor Moody, he was trying for some kind of condolences but it wasn’t working so well...
Lily took the opportunity to go and check on Sirius, even if he didn’t want the company... She found him holding his hand over the sink and staring blankly out the window.
Lily was thinking it was an odd position to stand in before she realised he was holding his hand there because it was bleeding and the sink was collecting the blood.

“Oh Sirius!” she rushed over and took Sirius by the wrist, holding his bloodied hand under the tap.
Sirius did a pretty good job of ignoring Lily for about five seconds before his brain registered that Lily had put the hot water on, and no cold. He reflexively flinched his hand away but didn’t release the object still clenched in his fist.

“Oh! Sorry!! I’m a complete scatterbrain lately...”
Lily went for the fridge, looking for a hand towel or some sort of tea towel to dab water onto Sirius’ cuts. She stopped in her tracks when she noticed a few post-it notes stuck to the now dented door.

“MILK” the first read.
“Sirius,” read the second, “we need milk.”
The third; “Seriously Siri. Milk. It is needed.”
The forth; “SIRIUS! GET SOME FREAKING MILK! TODAY!”
The last; “That’s it Sirius Black, for your birthday? Yeah, I’m getting you a cow. You shall milk it everyday, and when I want butter... You’re. Making. It. Got it mate?!”

Lily lost most of her self control for a second, silent tears spilled down her cheeks, she dropped the tea towel she’d reached for..

“I think I broke my hand” Sirius muttered behind her, he was still focusing on the window. Lily was thankful for the distraction.
“Let me see”
Sirius turned and held the still clenched fist out to Lily.
Lily prised his fingers open very gently, while his hand wasn’t broken, he’d managed to pretty much imbed the delicate ring he had been holding into the palm of his hand when he’d punched the fridge.

Lily recognised it immediately, a replica of an antique engagement ring, a family heirloom infact, Lily had helped ‘borrow’ the original for a day so Sirius could have this one made... with a few small changes, a small paintbrush and sword added to the design on the band to personalise it so it was hers and not her grandmothers.
...Sirius had never built up the courage to actually pop the question though...
Lily smiled sadly, removing it from his hand carefully and washing the blood from it.

“She would have said yes, you know.”

Sirius turned away, he didn’t want Lily to see him cry.
