. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

And back into the watercolours once again! I got a palette of Winsor & Newton's Cotman colours a month or so back and boy oh boy are they AWESOME! Having a lotta fun experimenting with watercolour paints and starting to get a little adventurous!

I always had to pretty much, completely finish the linework, which would close off the drawing so that I could kind of 'colour in' between the lines. I stil get real scared and nervy to take the step of just painting completely freely you see. But today, I painted OUTSIDE of the lines, and with less and less linework than usual!!! (So proud!) Big step for me, as you may know because watercolours to me are terrifying as equal as they are fun haha.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this one!

P.S : BIG NEWS! I FINALLY got a SCANNER!!! No more 'photos' of my drawings hahaha

Wow this is awesome.
Before I got that feeling too ... of being scared with the use of watercolors  and straying from the  lines  but as  you progress u realized that  painting  outside the lines  with this  kind of medium is far better as it  is therapeutic and liberating.

You're most welcome.
Yes . I have tell myself it's okay to drip it out or get messy with stuff with occasional color mishaps eventually I learned water colorists termed "happy accidents".
I then you realize it was so much liberating and therapeutic. Hehehe

I'm glad to hear we share these kind of thoughts  especially coming from an admired artist.
 It's  kinda cool actually.

Hahaha...  You should try inks too.  It has the fluidity and  magic like  watercolors  too.

Though I would still preferred watercolors  but it wouldn't hurt to explore and experiment  with other water based media like inks and gouache.
Looking forward  to see your works with  new medium then  hehe .

KURIZKURIZniKALAI In reply to kelogsloops [2015-09-23 09:12:13 +0000 UTC]

That's great hehe It's okay to try things first before you invest so much...  black ink is a good start. Can't wait to see  you work your magic with inks. Gouache is  like  a watercolor only it is not transparent.  Its like acrylic and watercolor combined hehe  Have fun  discovering these mediums.

Ohhhh is it!? I always thought gouache was more of acyrlic, whaaaat! Gotta try that out arhhh

KURIZKURIZniKALAI In reply to kelogsloops [2015-09-24 07:04:52 +0000 UTC]

aww maybe some tutorials on the net would help figure using ink out... but  a kickstarter  for that  I guess, is to get a  brush or nib pen and start doing how you would  with watercolors or ink pen to get familiar with it and the rest is  to enjoy  experiments  hehe. It's fun  to figure them out to your liking.

As far as I remember, I use it to apply like watercolors, though gouache is opaque  quality  is evident or applied thick for some coverage like  acrylic  the difference is that it can be activated like that of watercolor.
I  hope to hear some feed back  from you when u get a chance to use  gouache.

That's true  ... I do have  same issues  with inks like you and have to be  on point with them , unlike watercolor you can lift the pigment but with  inks it stains permanently .

Hehe  so did  you bought new set of gouache?   Did you tried it already and how was it?
Excited!

It's like   watercolor  especially on sale is calling your name.  No  questions asked watercolor it is.
What  brand of watercolor   was on sale  by the way  if u don't mind my asking?

kelogsloops In reply to KURIZKURIZniKALAI [2015-10-10 02:54:01 +0000 UTC]

It's so weird because like my friends, when they go shopping and ot the mall they freak out about 50% clothing/footwear sales etc and they spend hours and then I see 50% art supplies and I cry.

It was Art Spectrum! Still yet to try them, but I'm usually a fan of Winsor and Newtons

Same here but I think my friends understood  it now  before they think I'm crazy hehe.

That s cool  coz you have lots of brands to choose from   here its kinda limited ...
I have to shop online to buy my favored brands though.  I used W&N too  but it's really nice to try other brands  and experiment.

HAHAHA. Genuinely, my friends are like 'why the heck do yo uwant to go into that store' and they see my eyes light up.

Well, it's hard to find stores with lots of brands, because those are larger departments and they're a lot more expensive and only in the city My local ones are very limited too.

Same! I use W&N's but I want to branch out and try others

Same here. Artists dilemma aside from  the money that I will use  to buy hahahaha

Some artist grades like Daniel smith  is said to be awesome too ... How I wished to have it,  it really is expensive.

legit like a kid in the candy store. The other day i went to this other art store thats really popular in my city and I'd never been yet. I walked in and it was HUGGEE. It had soooo many aisles and I was screaming inside because it had EVERYTHING and 20% off paints oh my god. I even bought a moleskine notebook oh my god.

Ooh, I've never heard of Daniel Smith.

Hehehe WHAT! so envy you  art stores like mecca  for artist hehe especially like one stop shop all you can galore.
OMG... 20% OFF. It really shows u  had a great time  shopping with  screaming on the side hehehe and damn with moleskine.   Envy much  but  happy to  know u have a blast shopping.

It was mentioned  in  a learning forum and its a hype in there like  professional artist dig the DS brand than W&N  for its  vibrancy and range of colors ... they keep mentioning this  color  called moon glow and it was a treat to the eyes  on what they painted.

I was so happy. Just in that place, that 20% off all paint sale, just made me so at ease HAHHAHA (but panicked because i wanted to buy everything). Only problem is, I've got a half filled out watercolour sketchbook that I wanted to finish completely (it was a challenge), so I doubt i'll be able to use my moleskine until i finish another 40 pages of watercolour sketches NOOOOO!!!

I need to check DS out!

oops it took me awhile to reply ...  Sorry
But  on other  note  it made me smile seeing  your reply hehe
I understand how you feel   like buying every art material in the store hehe shopping galore.
Aww here   we rarely havt that kind of watercolor journal and moleskine is a bit pricey.
But i hope you will be able to fill the pages out soon.

I hope you do and me as well...  *crossing fingers*
But  I do have something interesting new set   given to me The brand is  Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolors.
I'm still  checking it out  and it looks promising . ehehe

That's okay! Totally understandable that you're busy hehe.

I've almost filled out the watercolor notebook, so moleskine, I'll come to you as soon as possible :-D

OoooOooh, are they good watercolours? I still want to try different brands.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KURIZKURIZniKALAI In reply to kelogsloops [2015-11-23 12:33:57 +0000 UTC]

Waah not busy at all...it's just that the glare on PC/ mobile screens made my  head aches  more.
So its more or less time with   online.

Oh that's so cool Hehehe ...  Though I've been hearing  moleskine aquarelle  are  really handy ones  but quite expensive for their size.

Yeah they  live up totheir expectation ... its a traditional japanese watercolor set.
Some of the colors have similar vibrancy of W&N,  it blooms  pretty well and has cool granulating effects.
However the packaging pretty as the box is... its not suitable  for watermedia.
They are  package neatly in a board box in which a careless like me  am  afraid that I would ruin  it.
So I decided to transfer it on a  metal pencil case available in my room.  hehe
Here's the colorblind's color swatches as comparison the 2 innerlanes  are kuretake and the outer lanes are Winsor and Newton.

Fair enough! I was just sick as well, so I had to take a week off from everything. Finalyl feeling better though

Yeah! That's what I heard as well, but luckily I was able to snag a moleskine when it was on sale hehe. Still expensive though, but would really love to be able to collect these 'journals' full of watercolour paintings of mine and one day look back and just pore over them.
Ooooooo. That's really smart! I'd love to try them out though. I did just buy new watercolour paints by art spectrum and daniel smith, so they've been really fun to play with besides from my classic W&N's

Aww. Glad to hear your feeling better.  And hoping full recovery is on the way.
My condition is quite complicated so  I still have lapses with  being online   at some point.

Me too love to have  journals   full of  watercolor  stuff , I even keep a sketchbook with everyday sketches of random concepts.
And then  when you  already  fill  every pages of them  you look back and  ask yourself   how did  I manage to paint this ? hehe

Gee thanks  Hope  you could try them  but what you have  I guess its much better ...especially  daniel smith    did u get the set? or individual paints?  ...their line are awesome  right   especially the duochromes and primatek ones. Range of colors are candies to my eyes  but the prices are killing me ... huhuhu
But still I think they are worth every cent.

Ohh by the way I read your reply  from chasing dreams  which I have to reply after this hehe.
So  for you to know that I'm not feeling awkward or uncomfortable at  all knowing that you are  guy now.
And it doesn't change a bit   that I like having this conversation  with you.
I hope I didn't make you feel bad.
Hope to see [insert smiley face here] from you soon.

Heaps better now! Though working 50 hour weeks for Christmas retail season really isn't making me much better

If you don't mind me asking, or if it's too personal, what condition do you refer to?

Exactly! That's the idea behind it So that one day, I'll look back and say hey, I drew hella weird stuff in 2015. I really do like seeing that sort of progress, especially in daily draws in sketchbooks (Would love to see yours one day!)

I got the individual paints from Daniel Smith!  They were ridiculously expensive, so I indulged in two; the Moonglow and the Autumn Mystery (Duochrome). They are SOOO worth every cent. I haven't been able to stop playing with those two colours arghh!

You didn't make me feel bad at all, I was just worried that you were uncomfortable. Glad to hear it's alright hehe

Hi  Hieu ... Season's greetings
Holiday busy buzz... hope after holiday you'll be   able to relax and get some  good rest. You really have to .
"After all Health is Wealth", cliche but it really is true... trust me.

Oh  that  health condition, I got brain tumor .
Diagnosed and  had an operation   5 years ago .  Last  october  was my 5th anniversary hehe
Tumor is  a functioning   one  so not all mass was taken  like  a fraction to millimeter from  3.5 cm diameter of it.
So upto now got  crazy ride  because of it , one reason I found  art  and turned to was  because I got depressed from  my condition, I was badly in need to  distract myself fro all of the situations at that time  . And ever since it became  my outlet.
So  that's why I call them my art therapy.  Most of it I find therapeutic  are watercolor works I did.  hehe
That's  why watercolor is my choice of medium.

Yeah That's what I thought too... And I'd love to  share  some of the one's I did though  I'm about to  change my  journal... ready for 2016. Maybe this time each month will have a theme for daily sketches and paintings hehe.

Oh  that's cool. OMG  i fell  inlove with moonglow...it some how paints by itself ... though I didn't get   the autumn mystery, I might try it  and  I heard duo chrome got its bling ...love the line.  Though it wasn't on the dot sheets.
Well I  AM really fascinated with DS,  I got mine with  15 % discount on  the essential set plus 15 ml tube of  perinone orange, cobalt teal blue,  quin.'s  gold and red ... the other set was given to me  as Christmas gift, an alvarro castagnet set  and moonglow with 25% discount  .   I'm so happy  it was made available now  with all year 15% discount. Christmas made colorful  by these goodies. hehe
They're so worth it .  Bah  by just  talking,  it got me so hyper hehe

Yehey!!!  It's settled  then  so Glad to hear.

Yay looking forward to 2016, My 2015  made  interesting with  you in it.

Hi hi again Kuriz! I'm so sorry I haven't responded earlier, I just got back from my holiday (i went overseas for two months!)
It's been such a crazy start to the year, but I'm super stoked to be back!

Wow... that's such an incredibly moving and inspiring story behind the art. I'm so glad that you found an outlet to find sanctuary in, I really do.

Oooh, how's the 2016 journal been going so far? I got a new one as well for 2016, and it's an upgrade (I splurged on a Moleskine YEAY!)

OMG I totally understand what you mean about getting hyped about Daniel Smiths HAHA. I've still only got those two, but I'm hoping the art store I go to drops a sale soon so I can buy heaps more. Moonglow is SO DAMN COOL, just the way it has that dual colour effect. The duochromes are AWESOME! The Autumn mystery has a slightly metallic glitter/surface to it, so its a really nice deep rosey/pink/orange with a nice sheen to it.

> Hi  Hieu ...  it's been awhile!!!    Just  call me Kalai, its my nick name ehehe
Glad to hear you're  back  and fresh  from   vacation  hope you had a great time.
It's crazy year, defintely.

> Thanks alot  Kinda weird though when I asked  what brought you to art and  to retell my story. I'm probably not that comfortable sharing  as much  I want to... i mean only to few  people I guess.

>I have  few entries my  WC journal needs more  work nyaaah  been having art block lately so  yeah  many unfinished entries hehe ... Wow  that so  cool  moleskine    quite pricey but still cool  upgrade. It's kinda  worth it to splurge with  that  kind of art materials... i mean so worth it in the long run.  You've had lots of entries by now?  excited  to see . ^_^

> Can't help   but  their worth a craze... haha  Yeah  so I heard with the  duochromes metallic  sheen are cool effect ... but wait till you see their primatek  series . Though I only had the dot cards  still they are quite awesome ... Cascade green from extrafine  line of DS  were  highly  suggested and cool  addition  to the colors available in your pallete .  Saving   for those goodies  for now.  also saving  as well for the quinacridones series in their extra fine  line.   I realized  how  important to  know each  pigment  there are some  that  often used colors are fugitive color  like  alizarin crimson and ultramarine  after 3-5 years it will fade  and some  colors are  that  contain cobalt in pigment should b taken extra care  pigments  contained  has health warning.
