Oh, and I watched Inception for the first time a few weeks ago and have fallen in love with the soundtrack. This was written to 'Time' - [link]

---

It was easy to see why this was the Sport of Kings. What monarch could fail to fall under the spell of shining coats and floating strides? What ruler could fail to be entranced by the gleaming thoroughbreds on show today? What human at all, in fact, could not be held spellbound as the horses paraded?

Eliza found herself looking longingly at the sleek silhouettes of the familiar Green Ivy, the bright bay Ravishing and the darker but no less imposing Eurasian Desert as they paraded. They were the epitomes of great British horses. Others circled too; a few Americans broke the British filled hubbub with their accent as they discussed their horses, a brown colt and a bay filly, both tipped to go to the BC Turf later in the season. A flighty Japanese invader had also turned up this year, ready for a fight.

Hrimfaxi wasn’t there. Graham had decided that a later, longer race would be more suitable than the pressure and speed of the Derby. There was a horse walking round in the famous blue and white, though. Quetzalcoatl.

Every one of them was outshone by the glittering chestnut. In a sea of bays and greys with nothing more than socks, stars and blazes he was glorious. Every eye lingered for far more time than usual on his fire red coat and his bright white markings, his tossing head and bolting blue eyes roving over the crowd. Snake’s grooms hung on with dogged determination, though they were being pushed around relentlessly by his swinging neck. He was walking though, and quietly too -at least for him, that is. He still sidled and hopped, but at least there was no kicking, or rearing, or biting.

Eliza always felt a rush of exhilaration whenever he passed her. His ears would peak and he’d turn his head, butt the groom out of the way, and look at her before moving on. She stood on the grass in the parade ring next to Graham, who occasionally grunted at his notebook. Snake came towards them, still walking around the ring, the pale faced grooms eager to be free.

The jockeys started arriving one by one. Sam appeared, auburn hair not yet concealed by his helmet, blue and white silks shining delicately in the June sunlight. He appraised his horse, greeted Graham, then turned to Eliza and hugged her. He ran his hands through her hair. ‘This is the biggest race of my life,’ he breathed.’ Thank you. Cheer for me, Els.’

She moved to press her head closer to his neck but he was gone. Graham was already at Snake’s flank; he boosted his jockey up and said something to him before returning to where Eliza stood. He just looked, with one eyebrow raised, at his young boss.

‘I hope you know what you’re getting into, Eliza. Relationships between employers and employees do not usually end well,’ was all he said.

---
The gates flung open and twelve bodies of horseflesh bolted out; twelve adrenaline fuelled men clung tightly to their backs. Green Ivy, as he was wont to do, dashed straight to the front. Sam O’Connor could see the colt’s backside from his perch on The Snake, before another horse swung in front and his mount was forced to check, snorting, to avoid it. Like a sheepdog, Snake jumped agilely to the side and dodged round, running three wide up the hill.

The first leg of the race was over almost as soon as it started. They rounded the corner, still scrabbling for position, and began the descent. The pack straggled out, the better horses drawing away from the lesser ones. Green Ivy still held onto the lead determinedly; it was just him and the Red&Sky colt, really. He was Snake’s only competition.

Our flaming colt was furious, his hatred of Green Ivy plastered all over his face. They entered the home straight and immediately the backup burners flared up and he re-broke, massive muscles propelling him ever closer to the wire-to-wire colt.

Ivy eyeballed him, sidestepping into the path of the dinosaur-like thoroughbred. Wong, his jockey, cursed loud enough for the crowd to hear and raised his whip.

Snake soared by. Ivy lurched forwards.

The camera flashed.

...

Snake had it by a neck.
