Description I stumbled upon Seph-Hunter's interpretation of this project [link] and thought it sounded like a cool idea (the premise is to pick a book, flip to page 100, and draw it as a comic). It's been a while since I've done a full comic and it seemed a good practice excuse before I start my Doctor Who comic hahaha.

Grabbed for my Wheel of Time books fervently wishing for a Mat chapter, and lo and behold, the first book I pick up hits the spot perfectly. THANKS SHADOW RISING.

In this scene, Mat comes to the sad realisation he's staying in Tear for the hot chicks. He also acts like a jerk (which is a common trait for like the first four books, lol). I love me some Mat but it's totally true.

Behold the inconsistencies in Mat's face from panel to panel! lolololol. His three-legged stool is tiny :[

CHRIST, DIALOGUE SCENES HAVE SO MUCH TEXT. HAND GESTURES EVERYWHERE. Some panels are a bit naff but I saw this more as a paneling and pacing excercise than perfecting artwork.

I happen to be in the middle of The Shadow Rising (for what has to be the fifth or sixth time) so this scene is nice and fresh in m memory, and you drew it quite nicely. Mat and Thom are definitely two of my favorite characters (we need more Thom in the next book, which we are likely to get, all things considering...) and the drawings you did are some of the best ones I've seen. Love the way Mat looks when talking about the girls and about ready to describe the roundest...heh heh

Thank you~

Ploughing through another re-read? I swear I do the same every few years, haha (I tried it again before Gathering Storm but I didn't make it in time before the book came out... the temptation to dive straight in was too great!)

Oh yeah, I'm a fan of those two as well, they have a refreshing quality about them. Towers of Midnight is gonna be so epic!

I really, really like this, the flow and layout is great. Of course more detail could be added to background and clothing and such, but you've captured the overall mood of the scene.

Haha, backgrounds and details have never been my forte, but I'm glad I got the atmosphere across

Thank you~

Haha yessss, I think as the books progressed Mat's ridiculousness became more and more a welcome comic relief. EPIC BAD SHIT IS HAPPENING, WE NEED A MAT CHAPTER, STAT!

Make a WoT comic

kimiko In reply to iFrostyIce [2010-05-23 03:23:08 +0000 UTC]

Haha I think I would die if I tried, just one page took this long. AND ALL THE BOOKS ARE LIKE 800 PAGES

It would be fun to do more scenes though.

Well the 90% clothing and landscape descriptions would certainly be easier in an comic

You should do more

Haha yes. Good old Jordan descriptiveness.

Turns out I really couldn't stop at one, so I've started making the second half of Chapter 24 into a comic (Ironically, for once I had to hunt around for a description of Mat's clothes, lol)

iFrostyIce In reply to kimiko [2010-05-25 07:19:53 +0000 UTC]

*excited*

Kind of strange that you don't find a description of the clothes immediately

kimiko In reply to iFrostyIce [2010-05-25 07:36:38 +0000 UTC]

UHHHH I HOPE I DO IT JUSTICE.

Yeah I was initially baffled as to why I couldn't find it; it's because it's in an earlier chapter (the gathering in the heart of the Stone) and never mentioned again. Because the locations jump around things get a bit disconnected in my head, haha.

good work! The best book of the Wheel of Time. I like how put in plenty of variety in the flow of the scene. it makes all the dialogue seem relevant and interesting. for just panelling and pacing, it's excellent.
*cough* Dr *cough* Who...

kimiko In reply to englermeister [2010-05-22 07:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks~

I agree, Shadow Rising was one of the best. I think it was the last WoT book to have that sense of mystery and wonder. Latter books had their moments but they started to get into more real-world-shit and politicking.

BACK TO WRITING SOME KIND OF WHO SCRIPT I GUESS...

I quite like this one! It shows a good depth of facial expressions, and how important they are for giving an emotional mood to the words being spoken. It can really change the whole tone of the dialogue.

I really like this page 100 idea, and think I'm going to give it a try myself. I always want to practice comiking, and this sounds like the perfect practice.

kimiko In reply to wraithdragon [2010-05-22 05:58:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Yeah, dialogue/conversation scenes are like that, they make you focus on character gesture and expression more. It wasn't until the second bottom row that any character movement was explicitly mentioned in the book.

This project is great fun for practice . Sorta like how fanfic can be good writing practice, working with established characters or scenes makes you pay attention to different aspects of comic making.

I've honestly never tried to draw a dialogue scene, other than the one or two speech bubbles variety.
But you carried it off beautifully.

I'll add this to my list of projects to do, I'd like to do it soon.
