Description An enormous catfish-like carp from a dream.

Possibly inspired by a story from ChineseΒ folklore, that a carp swimming upstream will be turned into a dragon if it succeeds in reaching the destination. maybe this time something went wrong and the fish was only partially transformed? Or maybe the process is gradual, like ontogenesis?

All I can think is, grill, bake, or fry?

Also, I learned in Korea you can mix the jelly from a large fish eye with liquor to make a super gross cocktail.

Maybe it works something like the Samlon/Grendel lifecycle from The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Steven Barnes?

Samlon are basically the harmless Tau Ceti Four equivalents of herbivorous freshwater fish. Grendels are ludicrously dangerous amphibious superpredators.

Samlon are grendel larva. Grendels will preferentially eat anything but samlon, but that's impractical since they're too effective predators whose ancestors basically exterminated the rest of their ecosystem's fauna through overhunting. Since half-metamorphosed samlon are unwieldy, slower swimmers and grendels are highly territorial, they'll typically get cannibalized by their parent. However, if something kills the local grendel, all the samlon in its territory will complete their metamorphosis and a massive horde of rampaging grendels results until their population drops back to a sustainable level through lethal territorial battles and starvation.

Thats a bit impractical if they feed on their own offspring. Sounds like they'd be extinct after a couple of cycles.

Adults are strictly carnivorous, larva are strictly herbivorous. Consequentially, there's always an otherwise-available food source of vegetation inaccessible to the adults save for in a roundabout way by spawning larva, having them eat it and convert it into edible meat, then eating them. The species is colossally r-selected, adults spawning completely unsustainably enormous populations of larva in the expectation that most of them will get cannibalized. There's more discussion on the plausibility or lack thereof involved in such a hypothetical lifecycle here .

I see, maybe this makes some sense then, I wonder what's about the inbreeding though.Β

Poor guy, he thought the transformation was gonna be instantaneous, but reality pulled the CARPet out from under him

I think this drawing could use some scales, but otherwise a fantastic carp! I can imagine it swimming in the depths of a primal lake, slowly evolving into its full draconic potential.

My Eastern Dragons don't have scales, and most of the carps I caught were the scaleless variant so it all makes sense, I think.

Interesting. I've never heard of one of the fazes of a dragon being a carp, just a serpent with a carp's face.

Not any right now (In the dream it had regular carp coloration) but who knows...
