Description
Long before the outbreak of the One Year War and even before the start of the Universal Century itself, Mankind’s ambition for greater Space Exploration was stifled by the vast distance between the heavenly bodies of its own solar system, with even the most advance rockets of the late Middle Era taking upwards of 10 years to travel from Earth to the far reaches of the Heliosphere. Thus for over a century prior to the Independence War, Humanity sought out a means to crack the secret to faster than light travel. Both the Earth Federation and later Principality of Zeon would pour a significant amount of time, money, and resources into their respective projects and while improvements to existing drives would be made to ease Space Travel within the Earth Sphere and Inner Planets, the key to a perfected FTL drive still remained just out of reach. However not long after Zeon’s victory and the establishment of the Earth Sphere Empire, the newly crowned Emperor Ghiren Zabi was approached by a team of Scientists and Engineers from the Zeon Institute of Technology who claimed to have finally made a breakthrough, though they also warned that even with their simulations showing great promise, there was only a 50/50 chance that the Drive would be a success. These events coincided with Ghiren’s purge of the Imperial Administration of those still loyal to his now deceased father as well as those who still harbored Anti-Zabi sentiments. In late UC 81 Ghiren used the pretext of a planned coup led by the war heroes Ramba Ral and Admiral Maharaja Karn to conduct an extensive purge of Zeon’s Military and Aristocracy. Though due to the immense popularity of Ramba Ral, Ghiren could not simply execute him. Taking an interest in the experimental Jump Drive, the Emperor saw a chance to kill two birds with one stone and in turn forced Ramba along with thousands of like minded political dissidents to take part in an outbound expedition to Proxima B Centauri via the FTL drive. Officially the expedition ended in disaster with the vessel entering slipspace never to be seen or heard from again, declaring all aboard dead, Ghiren had all those involved in the Drive’s development silently killed to prevent any unwanted information leaking to the general public. However unbeknownst to the people of the Earth Sphere the FTL drive had worked exactly as intended with Ramba Ral and the exiles successfully arriving in orbit of their new home planet on 17 September UC 82. Converting their vessel into a Space Colony, the exiles led by Ramba formed the Republic of Nova Zeon and over the next 10 years would send further expeditions to explore neighboring Alpha Centauri A and B where three additional semi-independent colonies would be established. In UC 101 these colonies were formally unified with the signing of the Centauri Accords which formed the United Worlds Confederacy, an economic, mutual defense, and political union of the four colonies led by Nova Zeon, furthermore the Confederacy would also adopt a new calendar beginning with the arrival of the exiles to Proxima b commonly referred to as the After Colony Calendar. While on paper the Confederacy was nominally led by Ramba Ral’s Nova Zeon, the Republic’s leadership position in the United Worlds would be challenged by the governments of the Confederacy’s member states, which consisted of the following.

Republic of Nova Zeon
Proxima B was the first colony settled by the expeditionary force of Ramba Ral in UC 82/After Colony Year 1. With most of the planet’s irradiated surface being too hostile to support human life, most of its inhabitants lived in orbital colonies which made up Nova Zeon proper with others living either underground in mining settlements or in domed cities established on the far side of the planet. In spite of its initial difficulties, Nova Zeon would go on to become the most populated and developed Colony in the Confederacy, officially Nova Zeon is a Representative Democracy which was intended to be led by an elected bicameral Parliamentary System. However due to deadlock in parliament and a series of crises early on which threatened the colony’s survival, Ramba Ral was finally forced to take supreme executive power over Nova Zeon in the form of the office of Archon-General, an office that he would continue to hold for the rest of his life.

Kingdom of New Eden
Was a Colony founded by exiled Zeon nobles who were disillusioned with Ramba Ral forming the Nova Zeon Republic and stripping them of the noble privileges they enjoyed under the old Principality, arriving in Alpha Centauri A the colonists discovered an Earth like planet near identical to Humanity’s homeworld, landing in it’s lush forests the planet was christened New Eden. Not long after the proclamation which established the Kingdom, the various nobles and their respective factions began infighting and over the course of a two year long shadow war threw the Colony into chaos. The conflict which would determine who would become New Eden’s first Monarch ultimately ended with the Commander of the colony’s Self Defense Force, one Alfred Barch, purging the nobles and seized control of the New Eden government, proclaiming himself Lord Regent until a formal Monarch could be crowned, New Eden functioned largely as a Semi-Constitutional Monarchy under the rule of the Lord Regent until Alfred was formally proclaimed King by the National Assembly in UC 109/AC 27

Principality of Leto
Located In Alpha Centauri B, the Colony which would become the Principality of Leto was established on a resource rich planet similar to that of Titan in the Jupiter Sphere, though with a considerable difference being the much more hospitable atmosphere. The Colony was founded and led by the exiled followers of the early Lunar Church who in time would implement their tenets into the administration of the government and spread their faith amongst newly arrived colonists. The planet was named Leto in honor of the Greek Goddess of femininity and motherhood, With the formal establishment of the Principality, Leto Society was organized in accordance with the principals of Lunarism with the Principality becoming an Elective Matriarchal Monarchy led by a First-Princess and supported by an aristocracy of lesser Princesses acting as regional governors. While Females, in particular those with Newtype potential, were groomed for overall leadership roles in the administration, military, and church, Males made up castes of workers tasked with extracting resources and manufacturing goods, while those who demonstrated proficient combat ability and Newtype potential were granted entry into a Knightly class who acted as the Colony’s primary foot soldiers and Mobile Suit pilots.

Directorate of Trident
In late UC 92/AC 10, just as mass colonization of the Alpha Centauri System began in earnest. A fleet of old Federation Ships arrived in Proxima Centauri, making contact with Nova Zeon, the force claimed to be remnants of the old Earth Federation Space Force carrying thousands of refugees from the Earth Sphere. Rather than submit to Zeon, a group of EFSF Flag Officers elected to take the forces under their command and enact the Exodus Protocol. A plan first laid out in the early years of the Universal Century which stated that if the Earth was ever threatened with or suffered catastrophic damage and massive loss of life, the remnants of Humanity should flee the Solar System and reorganize on Proxima B Centauri. Even with some of the most advanced near-FTL drives at the EFSF’s disposal the journey took a long 13 years and by the time they arrived neither the Exodus fleet nor the fledgling Nova Zeon was fit for a fight. Thus Ramba Ral quickly worked out a deal with the leadership of the fleet, allowing them to settle on the ocean moon of a newly discovered gas giant in Alpha Centauri A. After more than a decade of traveling through the vastness of space with few resources and many deaths along the way, the fleet’s leadership had organized their administration into a Technocracy ruled by a council made up of military officers and intellectuals with the state having authority to assign the roles of citizens best fitting their individual talents and allocating resources accordingly. Once arriving at their new home the colonists founded the Directorate of Trident and quickly began harvesting Helium 3 from the neighboring gas giant and using it’s fleet to secure control over vital trade routes between the colonies.

In UC 110/AC 28 a brief conflict broke out between Nova Zeon and New Eden as the latter sought to seize control of the Confederacy for itself. However, despite having the advantage in offensive capabilities and fleet size, New Eden suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Nova Zeon Defense Force led by Ramba’s son Hiro Ral. New Eden was taken by storm, the Space Port was destroyed along with the Planet’s three Mass Drivers, the capital city was captured, and Alfred himself would lay dead. The event which came to be known as the New Eden Crisis marked the beginning of Hiro Ral’s rise to prominence in the Confederacy as a leader capable of succeeding his aging father. Though even with the victory of Nova Zeon the Confederacy’s future remained uncertain, and with the passing of Ramba Ral in UC 117/AC 35 Hiro would once again be forced to prove himself when all three of the Confederacy’s member states launched a new rebellion against a perceive weakened Nova Zeon, unbeknownst to them however, Hiro had no intention of letting all his father’s work be undone without a fight.
