Description Made this 11 by 17 inch print for minicomi (and maybe any future events I go to depending on my success at minicomi).

I wanted to make another fanart of this epic movie so I made this. I like seeing San with her mask on. She has that mysterious noble warrior look that I enjoy seeing in female protagonists.

I used some photographs I took of my backyard's trees for the bark textures since I have a terrible time achieving semi realism with digital paint alone.

I apologize for the watermark. T_T

I like this, but I kind of think you should add more wrinkles and bend the clothing a bit, it seems a little too straight, even for semi realism. Other than that, I have no complaints.

KleeWyck In reply to crimsonsunset34 [2011-07-29 04:47:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yeah I see what you mean about the clothing being too straight/stiff. I need to practice drawing clothes to be honest, it's one of my weaknesses. Thank you for the critique.

If you want practice, take some pictures of models off the internet for practice, and make sure their clothing is the type you like. It's not hard if you have a model, right?

Ahaha. Well, it's fine. How did it end up, anyway? How many of these wonderful prints did you sell? And can I expect to see you at Cos and Effect?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KleeWyck In reply to ThisFoxWalksAlone [2011-07-28 00:20:15 +0000 UTC]

I didn't sell that many of them. I got a lot of compliments though but almost no sales. I think most people who went to minicomi were more interested in buying stuff with more popular characters. No, unfortunately I won't be going to Cos and Effect, but I'll let people know of any future artist alley events I go to in the future.

Studio Ghibli= Total win. Anyone who doesn't agree is free to have their opinion, but I'm also free to ignore. I liked your print so much that it's the only one I bought, consumed most of my non-food budget. I heard the Artist's Alley at Cos and Effect was full, anyhow.

Honestly, if I had more, I'd have bought two :3

KleeWyck In reply to ThisFoxWalksAlone [2011-07-29 04:43:53 +0000 UTC]

I agree, I love Studio Ghibli. Princess Mononoke was the first Studio Ghibli movie I had ever seen so it holds a special place in my heart. Aww thank you so much. Yeah I heard that their tables had been full for a while, guess I'll have to wait until next year.

ThisFoxWalksAlone In reply to KleeWyck [2011-07-29 06:21:33 +0000 UTC]

It's the same for me, really. First anime I ever watched was Princess Mononoke on VHS and it holds a special place in my heart. And yeah. Artists Alley at Cos and Effect and Anime Evo(when it was running) was always hard to get tables....

And no problem! Your print made my trip to Minicomi worth while! :3

I have never seen the art book for this movie but I would imagine that inspirations were drawn from numerous cultures for the design of the mask.

This is beautiful, especially Moro! Do you have any tips for doing fur? I've just started using photoshop and it's something I really struggle with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KleeWyck In reply to Girl-And-Her-Uke [2011-07-22 00:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Honestly I'm not that good at fur, fur (and hair) are my weaknesses. There was one really good tutorial for hair/fur that I used to refer back to but it got taken offline recently. I would say the best way to approach fur (at least for me, there's lots of different approaches) is to start working from darkest colours to lighter colours. I block in the shape of the animal in a dark colour and then start painting masses of fur in their various directions in a slightly lighter tone. After getting a good base, I start putting the little details with a smaller brush size. I'm not sure if that made any sense. I would just look around on DA for tutorials though, I'm sure you could find some useful ones. Also you need to study fur on real animals and understand what types of fur go where, how the fur changes directions on different parts of the body and so on. There's no easy answer, practice and study has always been the answer for me. I hope this helped.

Girl-And-Her-Uke In reply to KleeWyck [2011-07-22 10:30:54 +0000 UTC]

Aye, cheers, it has! I know practise is the only real answer but it's nice to know where to start. And you're very modest, you're a fur PRO!
