As all the plant life in the Elephant Graveyard disappears, so does all the prey -- and a lot of Shenzi and Banzai with it. But Banzai does what he can to make sure Shenzi and the cub/cubs keep holding on.
The next page will address them trying to find a new place to live, since a lot of people are probably wondering about that at this point.

Looking at the first panel really shows the transition from them being happy and healthy, feasting on a gazelle, to them with a little, but noticeable weight loss while eating a vulture, and then to them emaciated and miserable, having to barely scrape by with field mice, but Banzai willingly sacrificing his food just to make sure his wife and unborn cub are fed in the other panels. It’s really sad when you look at it. It seems like the Great Kings refuse to give these poor hyenas a break. At this point, it seems like we’re really close to the present and I’m quite scared for Shenzi, Banzai and their unborn cub. It’s the suspense of not knowing what happens to Shenzi that really makes me afraid for her.

With their food supply being next to nothing and the Graveyard back to being a desolate wasteland, it really does capture that somber hopelessness of their situation, but even in these dark times, I’m glad Banzai is remaining strong for Shenzi and their unborn cub and that they still have each other.
