Description German/Prussian battleship built in 1907 and commissioned in 1909. It was the first dreadnought in the Kaiserliche Marine, which was a response to British units of this type. She also had three sister ships: Wastfalen, Rheinland and Posen. She was armed with 6 twin 283mm guns (the arrangement was similar to the Japanese Kawachi-class battleships, although they were modeled on the ---- Nelson-class pre-dreadnoughts), 12 single 150mm guns, 16 single 88mm guns and 6 450mm torpedo tubes. This ship underwent a baptism of fire during the bombardment of the British coastal defense batteries of Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby. In 1915, he took part in the Battle of the Gulf of Riga, during which the German fleet unsuccessfully tried to destroy the Russian fleet. During the Battle of Jutland, he rammed the destroyer HMS Spitfire and, with the support of the battleship Thuringen, sank the light cruiser HMS Black Prince. After World War I, it was given to the Japanese Navy and then sold for scrap to the British in 1920.
