Description
German battlecruiser/fast battleship created in 1935 as a response for Dunkrique-class warships. At the beginning of the war, the ship, along with her sister ship Gneisenau, was assigned to raiding missions in the North Sea. The ships' first combat success was Operation Juno, during which it sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and its escorting destroyers HMS Acasta and Ardent. During Operation Berlin, the ships attacked convoys HX-106 and SL-67, sinking a total of 22 ships with a tonnage of 115,600 GRT. The ship sank in 1943 due to damage sustained during the Battle of the North Cape. Armed with 3 triple 283mm, 4 double and 4 single 150mm and 7 double 105mm. The ship had a sister unit - Gneisenau.
