Description Unlike this outdated tutorial [link] , this one is a very broad progress of how I go about with panel-drawing/coloring/etc.

Feel free to post questions in comments. I will try to answer them as best as I can..?

The panel is lifted from this comic I drew: [link]

How large of a sheet of paper do you normally use for sketching?

Great tutorial, thanks for making it!

How long does it take you (like a range of time, I know it probably varies) to make a comic strip? Or even just a panel, in this style for instance.

Thanks so much for this I always find it kind of difficult to work out how to manage the effects for comics. To get the blur-effect for movement is quite difficult too- do you use smudge or blur?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ky-nim In reply to Loki-Wings [2013-02-05 13:20:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't use smudge much...I use blur (the tool) in small doses. I much prefer using the blur filters (i.e. motion blur, gaussian blur)

Loki-Wings In reply to ky-nim [2013-02-06 09:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see, I see! ^^ Thanks for the tip! I'll try out the blur tool, and I gotta get me some Photoshop or something so I can use filters

This is pretty helpful! Do you have any tips for coloring quickly? I'm trying to start a comic but it seems like coloring is really time consuming, even just laying down base colors. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ky-nim In reply to AeyraV [2013-02-04 22:12:41 +0000 UTC]

I use the magic wand on the lineart layer to select areas I want to color. Then I make a new layer and use the fill tool to color it in. Then I use the paint tool to fill in the rest

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AeyraV In reply to ky-nim [2013-02-04 22:36:07 +0000 UTC]

I do that too, it just takes so long sometimes. I guess I need to make my lineart cleaner... do you do all of your coloring on the same layer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ky-nim In reply to AeyraV [2013-02-05 04:00:09 +0000 UTC]

I color by row but I merge it in the end to one layer

Fathix [2013-02-04 21:16:05 +0000 UTC]

This is very cool, and simple to understand. I've always liked using Overlay, especially since it works well as a sort of time saver for highlights.
The battle effects being done with the lineart is a good idea too. I imagine it makes keeping the composition in the overall image a lot easier, right from the start.

I always have trouble with placing and organizing the characters and action in panels and I think that might be why I have trouble committing to any sort of comic based project. Got any tips?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ky-nim In reply to Fathix [2013-02-04 21:47:36 +0000 UTC]

Well the organization really comes during thumbnailing. I kinda have a rough plan of how I want the action to come out and then make a panel fitting for that action.

I also find it easier to just have 1-2 characters in each action panel, esp if its just a simple battle. Obviously group battle panels are more complicated...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fathix In reply to ky-nim [2013-02-04 22:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Makes sense. I never really acquainted myself with thumbnailing, so I'll have to try to get back into the swing of doing that again. And I can imagine character-busy panels are a pain. I mean, regular images that are heavy on characters are, so condensing it into a panel is likely even harder.
Thanks!
