I believe it was still used by the Italian/Spanish at the time. I thought a beaded pillbox would make a good substitute for a crown too since I (even though I play a Princess) don't have one.

2, 3" hair combs (one in the top, one in the bottom) inside the hat. I still want to add 2-4 ribbon loops for bobby pins and hat pins

The hat is adorable! How do you shape it, make it stiff, etc.? Do you use a base or a pattern or something, or is it all from scratch?

It's no a plastic frame that I made out of (whatever that stuff is called they sell at Walmart for crosstitching?). Totally designed from scratch.
