Description Custom commission for a best man's gift.

This is a large horn at about 20" long and holding about 20 oz of water.

Runes were carved in to the horn then filled with a custom color of ink and finished with removable leather strap and leather grip. Stand shown is a custom piece by a blacksmith friend wrapped with matching leather.

Just exquisite, and beautifully photographed too. How easy is it to work/carve on horn? I've never used it so have no idea what it's like as a material (have tended to be a bit of a clay girl myself ), but am totally fascinated by this. Am off to check out your other pieces

So amazing!! But what kind of ink have you used?

lakotawolf116 In reply to TheRedRisingPhoenix [2010-11-26 18:05:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!!!

I actually use an oil-based printing ink; it's available at most art stores but is horribly messy to use.

My goodness, that is a fine piece of work you have there my friend. Hail the all father, Othin would be proud to see one of his Einherjar drinking from that horn.

20Oz. Of none other than the finest mead from Hedrun will do for this. You're a Horn Smith I take it?

Where are you based, what are your charges? That is, if you are what I take you for.

Thank you so very much!

I might be a Horn Smith, but still beingnew to the craft don't feel worthy of such a title. I'm based out of the Chicago area, and haorns comparable to the Raven Drinking Horn (though usually slightly larger) run about $70 before shipping.

Take care and hope the new year finds you well.

Uncommon and special.
A part of me is curious about what the runes depict, but the rest of me knows that it is personal, and respects it.
If only I knew more about horn, I could give comment on the craftsmanship, but I figure the mere fact it was given in a wedding ceremony speaks volumes. Those who are gifted this are very fortunate to know you.
